Could be the finest MG TF 1500! Before we tell you the details of what might be the best MG TF 1500 or at least one of the best in the United States. A little bit of American history on this English car might be of interest. American automotive buyers prior to World World II were not fully aware of what a true European sports car was like. After World War II the returning G. I. ’s who had been living in Europe for almost four years and had tours in such countries as England. Italy. France and yes Germany discovered the European 2-seater sports cars. The cars were exciting and a fun form of transportation. The G. I. s started to bring back some of these cars after the war. One of the very first and most popular European sports cars to be brought into the United States was the MG. Of course it started with the MG TC. followed up with the TD and then followed up with the TF. The TF originally came in with a 1250 cc engine but in 1954/55 the engine was upgraded to a 1500 cc which gave it 17% more torque and allowed it to keep up easily with American traffic. When it comes to the classic look of the European sports cars the post-war MG TF seems to exemplify the best of the overseas design. The MG/TFs were popular when they were new and are still popular today as a collector car. Light weight. short wheel base and the most nimble handling you can imagine. Let’s not forget the cut down door so that your left arm can comfortably rest on the top of the door. In addition to all this it has a muffler sound that is all MG! That brings us to the car in this eBay auction. an MG TF 1500 that about five years ago underwent a nut and bolt restoration at an unbelievable expense. The owner of the car sold it to the current owner and he purchased it as a #1 car. However before he brought the car home he asked one of the most famous MG TF experts in the United States to examine the car. He exclaimed that it was absolutely one of the best he had ever seen! However. in his opinion it still needed some very minor “massaging” to make it in his opinion an undoubtedly number one car. The current owner has an extensive list of items that the MG TF expert recommended be done to bring the car up to his high standards. Yes they were completed by the MG expert/guru before the current owner took delivery. In fact since the restoration there has been only 142 miles put on this fully sorted out car. That certainly equates to what additionally proves this car up to be full fledged top show car. The current owner went over and above by going to the MG TF expert and having it tweaked to the expert’s high standards. Original. numbers matching roadster. All sheet metal is original except for the ends of the cowl. The bumpers and grill are re-chromed originals. The frame and all suspension units were scrubbed down cleaner then your kitchen table. Only 3. 00 “TF” 1500’s were produced in 1955 Immaculately refinished Autumn Red paint. The side curtains. separate top and top bows are stored behind the bucket style seats. Road & Track. Dec. 1954 stated. “After last year’s test we asked if the TF was really that good. It is. an more. Even though the MG is the lowest priced sports car on the market. it is the accepted standard of comparison. ” The fourth registered owner bought this car in 2009 from his friend who had acquired it in 1987. The 63 hp 1500cc inline 4-cylinder engine was overhauled with a new water pump. all new gaskets. a new timing chain. cam shaft bearings and new mounts. The 4-speed manual transmission received new bearings. seals. and mounts. New u-joints were given to the driveshaft. The rear end received new bearings and seals. and the gearing was updated to 4. 55:1. It has new wheel cylinders. new brakes. new drums. new brake and fuel lines. new wheel bearings and completely new wiring. All of the gauges have been rebuilt and the interior is completely new. Every item that was replaced was purchased new from Moss Motors; no expense was spared. The low miles since the restoration confirm that this car has been pampered and cared for.
