Description for Mitsubishi Montero 1990
I hate to see it go, but I just don't have the time to put the work into it to restore it the way it deserves, so I'm letting it go for a steal to a new owner who will treat it right. Just moved into a new house and this won't fit in the new garage, so instead of letting it sit outside I'd like to see it go to someone to knows about these great old SUVs and will take good care of it. If you don't know what this SUV is right away, you're probably not the right buyer. If you do, you'll know how rare and wonderful these old rides are. They absolutely do not make them like they used to. I've owned and adored several "1st Gens" and this one is a nice example. That said, it needs work. The timing belt has not been done, it will need tires soon, and the engine needs maintenance. Other Monteros have sold for $5,500 on ebay recently with all of that work done, so I'm asking a price that factors in the assumption that to make this a great daily driver that will last another 25 years you will need to put a few thousand dollars into it. The bones are good but this is a project car.
4 wheel drive, Automatic, Power Steering, Power Windows, Power Brakes, Power Sunroof. Has the large 3 Liter V6 that purs like a kitten. Nice condition, mechanicallygood shapebut aesthetically not perfect. It has a few spots of rust and the interior shows its age in the driver seat and headliner. However, the carpets and the passenger/rear seat are in perfect condition. I even have the original floormats.
If you know anything about these rigs you know they are built like tanks. You can either drive it like it is, and it would make a great daily driver or weekend warrior into the woods/mountains, or if you were to invest a little money into it this could be a very desirable and attractive SUV. Everyone loves the boxy shape and most folks who aren't familiar with it asks me if it's an old Range Rover. I just completed a 600 mile road-trip and it ran as smooth as a brand new SUV. Tires are in good shape with a brand new spare on the back. OFF Road or Family Use, Ice Cold AC, Runs excellent, very reliable car, excellent transportation. Has a factory trailer hitch that hasn't been used more than a handful of times, so it looks and is practically new. Has a modern stereo installed with an input jack and remote, but I also havethe original radio that will come with the car.
Glass and rubber are all in great shape. The windshield was recently replaced and looks brand new with no chips or dings at all. The windows are tinted and all of the tint is in great condition aside from the rear window, which has a couple scrapes in the tint where it came off. The car has aftermarket shade panels installed on the driver and front passenger door. These are pretty large, and great if you live in a sunny place. I personally found them really convenient, and they are in decent shape.
The motor and driveline have been maintained well. There are some new parts on the engine including a new distributor cap, new wiring, and the oil and fluids were always changed regularly and synthetic royal purple oil used for the motor. The car rides like a dream on the highway and off-road. Even the cruise control still works great. Suspension is solid and as expected from these SUVs I would trust this not to leave me stranded on a long road trip or venture into the mountains.
To be as thorough as possible, this is a 26 year old vehicle that is in original un-modified condition. It is not perfect and any bidders/buyers need to understand there are many cosmetic imperfections and work needs to be done to this vehicle to make it perfect. I will try to be as complete as possible on the details but ask any questions prior to purchasing.
Here is what is wrong with it:
The driver seat is worn. There are no tears, but a few small speckle stains and the cushioning is worn down a bit. I still think it's comfortable, but compared to the other seats in the car that look showroom new, the driver seat could use a little love.
The drivers side seatbelt is starting to fray. It still works fine but is frayed a little.
The ignition switch is a little sticky, but works fine. I'd probably replace it eventually or have someone clean it out if I were keeping it.
There is a security system installed from the 90's. My wife got tired of hearing it, so I took out the speaker. I'll include that in the sale so if you want to have it functional again you just need to re-attach the 2 wires under the hood and screw in the speaker. It's a motion/proximity sensor and actually talks! It says thingslike, "Proximity alert, step back from the vehicle!" I thought it was pretty cool, and again it functions and I have two keyfobs that work with it. You can either take out the whole thing, leave it as is, or attach the speaker again and it'll work like it used to.
The headliner is coming down in the rear. There are no tears up front but if there are passengers in the back it hangs down.
The passenger side rear quarter panel has some rust. The size is about 6" by 4". There are a few other small quarter size spots around the vehicle, see the pictures for details. The body shop tells me this will require either a replacement quarter panel or cut out the rust and weld the section back on with new material to fix this properly.
The front right panel has a small indentation from a parking lot light-pole ding. The body shop tells me that one can be pulled/hammered out easily. No rust there.
The power sunroof still works but the open/close is slow going. I'm not sure if that's just how these things work or if it means the motor is on its last leg. My main concern has been water seal, and it closes tight as a glove with no water entry at all.
The turn signals go on/off but do not blink. The mechanic tells me this is a cheap fix with new fuses. The same applies to the e-brake light which flickers on and off. The e-brake works perfectly but even when the car is on/running the dashboard light comes on intermittently.
This is by no means a perfect condition vehicle, but it has been a wonderful daily driver and is a lot of fun as-is. Put a few thousand into it and you'd have a very rare and beautiful classic SUV.
