Evolve Motors is pleased to present this classic 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442!

Ever dream of owning a piece of American automotive history? Well here’s your chance! The 1976 Olds Cutlass 442 was one of the last surviving muscle cars of the bygone era. By this time, the EPA had stepped in and put a stranglehold on the fast car market, with their big engines and open exhaust causing. Catalytic converters and oxygen sensors took the place of open headers and leaded fuel. Oldsmobile, on the other hand, wasn’t quite done building some fun, go fast, V8 cars. They just had to play by the rules a little more… Hence, the 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. By this time, Olds had pretty much just made the 442 a performance / appearance package, offering a few different V8 engine options, in lieu of their new 250 cid V6 (standard in ‘75), and of course the iconic 442 badging and lettering on the exterior. This particular design was monumental for Oldsmobile at the time, as it had undergone a complete redesign of the front clip and body lines just the year before, to allow them to use the car for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. The new aerodynamic, slope-nosed design and split grill give it that signature “4-4-2” look, along with revised lower sheet metal and fewer creases than the ‘73-’75 models. No, this isn’t your dad’s ‘72 442 with the dual disk clutch and the 455 “Rocket”, but it is a very cool car that will still get you plenty of attention, with a powerplant that’s sure to please!

The exterior of this Olds cleans up very nicely. It’s nice to see a 40 year old car that’s not full of bondo and replacement panels. The car did undergo a repaint some years ago, and shows some inconsistencies in the door jambs, and under the deck lid. The repaint is very close to the factory Buckskin Metallic. There’s a small spot where the buffer cut through the clearcoat on the driver’s side quarter panel. There’s also a few spots of rust close to the driver’s side back window, and along the bottom of the rear windshield. The only other rust on the car is along the bottom of the passenger side door, as noted in the pictures. The good news is that where some of the major rust headaches start to form (door jambs, rocker panels, etc) are as clean as a whistle! The headlight bezels show their regular patina, with some light pitting in the chrome coating. All in all the car is a solid 7 out of 10. It’s not a show car, but if you want a nice quality driver that’s going to turn plenty of heads, this is your ride!

The interior of this car goes right along with the exterior. Not perfect, but still in damn good shape for being 40 years old! The dash is clean, free from any cracks and blistering. The original carpet is in great condition, and goes nicely with the Buckskin vinyl seats. The driver seat has had some patchwork done on it, to repair a tear at one time. The passenger seat has a small wear hole in the back corner of the bottom, as well as along the back bench seat bottom, which are noted in the pictures. The headliner is like new, with no signs of sagging or repairs. The gauge bezels and AC / heat vents are showing some patina, which lets us know that the car really hadn’t had any major work done on the inside, and that the gauges are factory correct. Everything functions beautifully on the car. The power windows go up and down at a nice pace, and all of the amenities are in good working order (AC / Heat, Radio, etc.). Again, this car scores a 7 out of 10. Not perfect, but far from being a basketcase.

Mechanically is where this car shines! When you turn the key and hear that 350 “Rocket” motor start up, you know you’re driving a piece of American history. Equipped with a Holley 4 barrel carb, this was one of the last years for Oldsmobile’s big V8 Rocket motors, as the energy crisis from 73-74 really put a damper on the muscle car era. This one’s a 2 owner survivor! Sure, we had to have a catalytic converter, but no one said we couldn’t add headers! There’s really no sound in the automotive world like an American V8 revving it’s ponies, and this 350 power plant puts 170 of those ponies to good use every time you slam your foot to the floor! Don’t be scared, she won’t bite.. The 3 speed automatic shifts as smooth as butter. Driving it over a few speed bumps on our initial test drive brought us much relief, as we didn’t notice any clunks or creaks or moans or groans. Climb on in and take this car down to the races on a Friday night, or pile the kids in and take it across the state to grandma’s house for the weekend. This Oldsmobile is ready for any road trip you want to take her on, and she’d like to leave today if possible! Call us today to hear more!
