1968 HURST/OLDS PRODUCTION EXPLANATION
The H/OCA was provided the list of 1968 Hurst/Olds VIN’s, with the stipulation that it would remain the property of the H/OCA and only the adviser and library would have a copy. This information was provided by Jack "Doc" Watson back in the 80's-The first 1968 Hurst/Olds is owned by the Demmer family is a 4-speed car. John Demmer, George Hurst and others were all friends. The idea for this car followed the building of the Hurst "Hairy" Olds exhibition car that was used for promotion of Hurst products at tracks in 1966 &1967. The Demmer car is a preproduction car and is not part of the 515 H/O's that were the production run. The reason for the proposed 500 H/O's to be built was so they could run at dragstrips as a production car. 500 units qualified them as an official production run. That being said I will explain how these cars were built and what is on the list. The cars were built at the Olds assembly plant in Lansing (including the installation of the 455). Once completed, they were parked in Oldsmobile's parking lot. The cars were then taken across town, in no particular order, to the Demmer facility for the Hurst conversion. The cars were parked in Demmer's parking lot to await being taken inside for conversion. Employees moved the cars from the parking lot to the building in no particular order. Once the conversion was complete, they were put back in the parking lot to be retrieved by Olds and then sent to dealers. Our list has the last 6 digits of the VIN, the dealer name the vehicle went to, and the number Demmer assigned to the car. Demmer numbered the vehicles as received in no particular order in the parking lot.
The date it was completed was then listed by Demmer. Conversion dates at Demmer begin on May 24, 1968 and run through July 12, 1968. (THIS IS NOT THE OLDSMOBILE PRODUCTION DATE.) EXAMPLES: The lowest VIN on the list of 515 production cars is 368509. It was the 13th car converted by Demmer and was done on May 25. The first vehicle completed by Demmer was on May 24, but it was the 18th H/O built by Oldsmobile. The first car built by Oldsmobile was converted at Demmer as the 13th car on May 25.
Your car was completed at Demmer on July 8, 1968. Also on July 8 there were a total of 8 H/O’s completed. Oldsmobile cars #455, 476, 483,486, 488, 491, 494 and 510.
Your VIN, 344778M425504, was the 455th car completed by Oldsmobile and the 490th car completed by Demmer. It was sent to McDavid Olds in Houston, TX .
