Description for Oldsmobile Starfire 1962
Vehicle Overview 345bhp, 394 cu. in. V8 engine, Rochester four-barrel carburetor, four-speed Hydra-Matic Drive automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, semi-floating rear axle with four-link suspension and coil springs, and power-assisted four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 123" In mid-1961, Oldsmobile introduced the Starfire, a high style, high-performance luxury car that recaptured Oldsmobile's rich performance heritage. Aimed squarely at the personal luxury car market dominated by the Ford Thunderbird, the Starfire was built on a 123-inch wheelbase shared with the Eighty-Eight line, and offered a host of distinctive features. Priced at $4,647, the Starfire Convertible had a multitude of standard equipment including all the features of the Super Eighty-Eight as well as attractive brushed aluminum side panels, a sporty cockpit featuring bucket seats, leather upholstery, a floor console with a tachometer and power-operated front seats. Befitting its status, the Starfire was powered by a 394 cubic inch V8 engine with 345 brake horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, courtesy of a Rochester four-barrel carburetor, 10.5:1 compression, a revised camshaft profile, an efficient combustion chamber design, and a free-flowing dual exhaust system. Power was routed through a four-speed Hydra-Matic Drive automatic transmission and sent to the rear wheels via a 3.42 Anti-Spin rear axle. The Starfire returned for 1962 to include a hardtop variant. In fact, its success spawned a host of similar GM offerings including the Pontiac Grand Prix, the Buick Riviera, and Oldsmobile's own Toronado. The 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible offered here is a multiple AACA award-winner, restored by the previous owner and Harbor Auto Restorations of Pompano Beach, Florida between 1994 and 1999. This striking example displays a factory-correct Chariot Red exterior finish, complemented by a correct white convertible top and a set of painted steel wheels with stylish turbine wheel covers and whitewall tires. The interior features eye-catching leather and Moroccan vinyl upholstery with a multi-tone medium gray color scheme and gray carpeting. In addition, this Starfire is equipped with a long list of amenities including power steering, power brakes, power windows, Safety Sentinel speed warning indicator, Highway Pilot cruise control, Guide-Matic headlight control, remote trunk release, and a Super Deluxe radio with a rear-mounted speaker. Correctly restored and very nicely presented, this 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire Convertible is certainly an exciting, stylish and powerful automobile. It will continue to draw interested onlookers and will provide an abundance of open-air motoring pleasure for its new owner.
