Description for Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight 1962

1962 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 2 door hardtop

Very similar to an Impala - but much lower price!

I bought this car from a gentleman that had owned it since 1968. He told me how in 1968 his older Oldsmobile had thrown a rod and he went to the local Olds dealer in Jacksonville, FL to get a replacement car quickly. This Olds had been traded in and had low miles so he bought it, but never intended to own it for 48 years! I have lots of old receipts and paperwork, including a letter he wrote about the car to a newspaper for a car editorial.

In the eighties the car was used as a backup and then in the 90’s it sat most of the time. When he retired in 2006 he decided to start refurbishing it. The original 394 V-8 was rebuilt, the transmission was rebuilt, front suspension and brakes were all overhauled and the air conditioning system was rebuilt. The seats were recovered. the he performed the body work and paint job himself.

The engine runs very well and has only 10k miles on rebuild. However, there is a fuel issue that needs to be corrected. It will start right up, idle nicely, but if you accelerate too hard it will bog down. I would say the fuel system may need to be cleaned including a possible carb rebuild. Tires, brakes, suspension and drivetrain are all in great condition. Although the A/C was rebuilt, the car sat and now it is not turning on. It may have just leaked freon but I have no worked on it.

Interior is very nice – love the blue! Dash, carpet, headliner seats and door panels are all in nice condition.

The body is fair to good – the body work that was done is popping back through in areas. The worse areas are the doors and the area in front of the rear wheels. There are also smaller amounts of bondo in lower front fenders and quarters, but they seem minor and are not bubbling. However, if you tap them or use a magnet you can tell. Trunk and floors are solid. There is also some rust between the trunk and rear valance which was repaired. I am trying to be as honest as possible as I know it is hard to buy a car without seeing it.

Overall, this is a very nice old car for the money. It is something you can drive as is (after fixing the fuel problem) or restore. I simply have too many old cars right now and have decided to sell off a few.

If this was a 1962 Impala 2 door hardtop it would be twice the price – plus when was the last time you saw one of these at a car show?

No Reserve – I am starting the auction at the lowest price I am willing to sell the car.
