Description for Oldsmobile 442 1970
Olds once proclaimed its coveted 442 to be "the keeper of the cool" and it only takes one glance at this 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible to confirm that their assessment was dead on. It's a super sharp vintage drop-top in great form, still featuring its original color scheme both inside and out and harboring a strong running big block underneath its scooped hood. Add to that its promise of exhilarating open-air motoring and you have a classic with very... few equals. The Matador red displayed here is the very same shade this '70 started life with and a skillful refreshening over the years has left it in very strong shape, with a nice consistent shine and silky smooth texture. Those white accents running over the dual scoops on the hood and spanning the lengths of the sides aren't decals - they're painted on and a closer inspection will reveal just how precise that work was as well. Up front, the prominent Olds 442 emblem divides the very clean looking grille in half and, as you take a lap around the car, you'll notice the other exterior fittings and the trim surrounding the windshield are in equally good condition - the 442s of this era featured expansive rear bumpers and the chrome on this one is especially nice as it sits underneath the deck lid with its aggressive-looking spoiler. For those occasions when shelter from the elements is called for, the power white convertible top is in great shape as well - its rear window was also recently re-beaded on its seam and thoroughly polished for plenty more miles of trouble-free use. Inside, the ivory-colored interior is looking very strong, with front buckets and a rear bench seat that show only the slightest sign of usage as they sit above the contrasting, clean black carpeting. The factory console sitting between the buckets really looks nice and offers some very handy lockable storage space while sitting at just the perfect height on which to rest an elbow while driving. Just beyond the original steering wheel sitting on its tilt column, the dash area is another strong feature, with its assortment of clear factory gauges and the in-dash vents on each side standing ready to cool things off via the strong-running featured factory air conditioning. Its burlwood accents appear to have been recently applied and really present well. Another factory feature - a genuine 8-track - sits just below the radio to provide another era-appropriate touch. The spacious trunk area is nicely detailed, with its inner fenders well-protected from the elements and a full-size spare inside. From the beginning, a sizable portion of the 442's appeal centered on its robust performance and the 455 cubic inch V8 on board here is more than up to the challenge of delivering on this continued promise. This powerplant is running very strong - it was rebuilt a few years back and the work was definitely done right - and it sends a nice, deep note out through its Flowmaster mufflers. During the rebuilding process, it was bored .060 for even more displacement before being reunited with its original 4-barrel Rochester carb and it pairs with a 3-speed TH400 that's shifting nice and smooth. The engine compartment features a very authentic look right down to the hoses and clamps inside, and its fresh red inner fenders really set things off nicely. Power steering makes this classic Olds an easy navigator, while power brakes - with discs up front, bring its set of 14" stock wheels with their Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires to prompt, fade-resistant stops. Below, the undercarriage looks as fresh as can be. This 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible is a top tier, strong running representative of its model and is sure to attract a lot of attention.
