Description for Other Makes Model SED MA A-12 1964
This is a 1964 Checker Marathon car I bought out of San Diego California (never a cab). I have owned it since 2002. It has been stored inside. It started right up and ran smooth with no mechanical noises when I got it but over the years I believe the fuel has turned bad and the battery is dead so now it does not start. I put in new oil and a new oil filter when I got it and it will still crank when jumped. The automatic transmission is smooth shifting. The tires have good tread, however, I would change out the tires due to their age. The brakes lines, master and slave cylinders are all new. This car was originally gray and is now painted checker cab yellow. It looked really good when I got it, but now, part way through the restoration process (see inside garage photos), it is dirty and somewhat disassembled. There is a dent in the hood. The leading edge and one side seam of the hood and the area below the back license plate is rusted through. The interior is very spacious. I took the head liner out and the front and back windows out. All windows are in good shape. The front and back glass are included but not installed.. All door windows crank up and down. There are rips in the front bench seat. The back seat has no rips. The driver side mirror is gone. The wipers do not work. All the Checker symbols inside and outside the car are gone. Most of the chrome exterior parts I have but there are a couple pieces missing. The car needs all new weather stripping throughout.
Note that the frame is very solid and not rusted through anywhere.
Parts and work done by me:
Relined the brake shoes (all drums)
Turned all the brake drums.
New brake master cylinder (dual split system front and back)
New brake slave cylinders in the wheels.
All new steel brake lines and all new brake hoses.
New shocks in the back.
All new steering bushings.
I have a photo copy of the owner’s manual and a repair manual.
I have a paperback book - Checker “Road Test” limited edition, by Brooklands Books.
Of Interest:
1964 was the last year that the industrial in line 6 cylinder Kaiser Continental L-Head 6L-226 cu. inch engine (80 HP) was used switching to a Chevrolet straight 6 as the standard offering.
The last Checker model rolled off the assembly line on July 12th. 1982.
