Fuzzy Dice Autos has up for auction something most people know nothing about nor have ever seen. It's a 1973 Trabant 601 S Deluxe sedan. Now for the car's very interesting history:Manufactured in East Berlin behind the Communist Wall in 1973. The Trabant was made from the 60's through the late 80's. Then when the Wall came down. the Trabants came out!Back when they were produced in East Germany. residents there had to order their new Trabant and put on as much as a 12 year waiting list before they'd actually have it. Thus the used Trabants were sometimes more valuable then the new ones. One was able to buy a Trabant privately. This is a 2 stroke. 2 cyl. four speed that's gravity fed. A mixture of oil and gas was necessary. No fuel pump needed. Believe it or not the Trabant is rated to have a top speed of 65 mile per hour with a consumption rating of 50 miles per gallon. The 601 S Deluxe model was considered top of the line. The deluxe featured a trailer hitch and a heated rear window. The car is constructed of cotton pressed in a hard indestructible resin product. The under carriage and frame however is metal. Most of the Trabants were the 601 model that ran through the assembly line from 1963 to 1989. They were also produced for law enforcement and the military. Only very slight changes were made to the 601 though those years. It was far less expensive for the country to continue the same parts and body style. An estimate of only 200 Trabants are presently on American roads today. Fuzzy Dice is fortunate to have one of them!Money was scarce in East Berlin and the Trabant was built with minimal cost. But it does have all the safety features that comply with the United States motor vehicle laws. The car is in great condition for being totally original. The paint shows nicely with the normal wear expected of 42 year old car. The roof has several small quarter size areas where the paint has chipped. Instead of spending the two hundred dollars to repaint the roof. we decided to keep it original and let that decision up to it's new owner. The wheels and tires are in good condition. I put generic wheel covers on the car to dress her up a bit. They could come off as easily as they went on. Also note that it's still displaying the original East Berlin license plate!The under carriage is also in good condition. No rust or damage anywhere. The interior is also totally original to the car. The seats. floor. headliner and dash are all very nice. No rips or tears. The odometer reads 59. 60 km. That converted to MPR is 37. 29 miles. Judging by the car's condition. I have no reason to dispute the actual mileage. Driving a Trabant is a real trip! The gear four speed plus reverse pattern is different from other vehicles. Not sure what the Commies were thinking when they designed the transmission. It takes a bit of getting use to. It's actually a fun experience driving a Trabant. It spins around the city and turns heads where ever you go. Partially that is because of the 2 stroke engine noise she makes! It's been referred to as a weedwacker in a plastic box!This particular Trabant came to the states by vessel on October 14th. . 2009. All the Declaration and entry documents come with the vehicle. Since acquiring the car we were able to get a certificate of title in Pennsylvania. So one could now use it as their daily driver is they wish. I'll be sad to see our Trabant leave Fuzzy Dice Autos. as will our customer base who would always stop and take "selfies" with it. There's so much more to be said about "the Trabant. " But I'm sure those of you who know about it's history probably could tell me something I don't know.
