1922 Maxwell 25 Touring Sedan Seldom-seen, two-owner car, same owner last 36 years! Maxwells are rarely seen today and virtually unknown by the general motoring public. It comes from a prominent Indiana collector who has cherished this Maxwell for the past 36 years, since 1982! The mileage on the title shows 13,000, today it shows 13,518.This example has had two previous owners and was refinished in late 2003. The car’s blue over black paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. Car features a split-folding windshield, rebuilt fenders and newer running boards. The color combination lends both elegance and understatement to the vehicle. The bodywork is straight and solid while the engine bay is very tidy. Note that there is only a driver’s side windshield wiper, a common practice at that time. This Maxwell wears Olympic balloon tires, size 31x4 at all four corners. Each tire is wrapped around a black, steel, disc wheel with chrome trim rings. Out back is another Olympic tire for the spare. The tires and wheels are in very good order.Under the hood is a rebuilt 186 CID inline four-cylinder motor with an Eagle updraft carburetor. Backing that engine is a three-speed manual transmission and a 4.56:1 differential. The black interior is immaculate. The new, cut pleated leather seats look fantastic. The car’s floor looks the same and comes with mats. There is a four-spoke, wood-rimmed steering wheel that lends just the right amount of charm to the interior and the AMP gauge is inoperable. The black, metal instrument panel is in very good order while the inner door liners are in satisfactory condition. The vinyl top is also newer complete with newly refinished side curtains for all for corners! This Maxwell was made during a turbulent time for the company. In 1920, during an economic recession that followed World War I, Maxwell had 17,000 unsold cars at one point. Two years later, it attempted a merger with Chalmers Motors that went poorly for both companies and Maxwell officials made poor company decisions that resulted in becoming overextended on financing. These actions, along with poor quality vehicles, led to the arrival of Walter P. Chrysler in 1923, who tried to work his magic on Maxwell. To illustrate his good intentions, he announced that all problematic Maxwells sold would be repaired for free by the company. By 1925, Maxwell was phased out of production and Chrysler introduced the car company that bore his name. Maxwell’s assets were rolled into Chrysler, with Maxwell designs and parts going toward a four-cylinder Chrysler in 1926 and a new marque for 1928 – Plymouth.Documentation includes original Instructions book, copies of a letter dated May 30, 1957 from when a prior owner tried to re-register the car plus miscellaneous photos and information.VIN: 372795This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 13,518 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title.
