Description 1937 Packard 120C-D 7 Passenger Touring SedanListed on behalf of the owner.
Located in SPOKANE, WASHINGTON
Sold new on February 10, 1937 by Nelson Motors in Muskegon, Michigan. This 120C Deluxe Model 1091 7 Passenger Touring is a unique, one-year-only body style produced by Packard on a 138" wheelbase. No doubt, Packard soon realized they were cutting into the sales of their "Senior" Super-8 7 Passenger Sedan by offering this model, so it was discontinued after 1937. In many ways, it is superior to the Super-8 in terms of performance and handling. The 120 is nearly 1700 pounds lighter than the comparable Super-8 7 passenger Sedan, and with a difference of only 10 horsepower (120 HP vs. 130 HP for the Super-8) the 120 actually has a greater power-to-weight ratio, which combined with the lighter handling, makes the 120 a superior road car, especially today in modern traffic.
This car lived in Muskegon most of its life. While the early history is unknown, it was owned for many years by a collector who undertook a full frame-on restoration just prior to exhibiting it at the 1999 Packard Centennial "Magnum Opus" show in Warren, Ohio (the birthplace of Packard.)
The car was stripped and painted in correct "Hickory Leaf Green," which today shows a deep shine with only normal signs of use. Body is straight with excellent panel fit. The interior was correctly reupholstered in gray wool broadcloth and green wool carpeting. The woodgrained door and window moldings were expertly refinshed. All exterior chrome and trim was re-plated and polished. Nicely optioned with dual sidemounted spare tires, Packard spotlight, Packard driving lights (wired as front turn signals), Packard heater/defroster, restored clock. Radio with overhead speaker hums but does not sing. Folding rear foot rest and dual jump seats. Please see photos which were just taken for this listing and show current, excellent condition.
Mechanically, the engine was fully rebuilt using an identical 1938 120 block. The drivetrain, brakes and all ancillary components were also rebuilt. A large file of receipts documenting the rebuild, and other receipts back to 1964 is included. Following the restoration, the owner drove the car from Muskegon, Michigan to Warren, Ohio (an 800 mile round-trip) without incident. Today the car shows just over 9,400 miles, which we believe is total mileage since restoration. I have personally driven this car. It runs and drives without fault. Plenty of power. No smoke or noise. Shifts smoothly. Stops fast and straight. Runs cool, even on a 90 degree day. Comfortable on the road at 55-60 mph. Older bias-ply tires handle well. Undercarriage is clean and rust-free with no signs of abuse or accidents. I have driven dozens of Packards from this era and have owned both 120's and Super 8's, so am in a good position to compare. It is a very comfortable car to drive. Even with the two folding jump seats, unlike a limousine, there is no division window between the front and rear compartments, so the front seat is fully adjustable for all driver heights. This is a very nice car that was obviously well restored and maintained over the past 20 years. Please see video link below, of engine running and car driving.
There is little to add. If you are looking for a wonderful and rare Packard to enjoy for club touring, a night on the town with friends, or even for a limousine/livery service, this would be a great car. A reasonable reserve has been placed on this Packard in keeping with its condition and rarity, and well-below the cost of restoration today. Please bid accordingly.
