Description for Plymouth Barracuda 1970
1970 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible
The new 1970 Plymouth Barracuda was introduced along with the all-new Dodge Challenger. Both shared the new E platform, which stood for extended and, appropriately, was an extended version of Chrysler's K platform. An extremely similar look shared by the cars fittingly resulted in them being known as the Mopar Twins.
Complete with its 1970 E Body Build Sheet, this Barracuda with original mileage, resprayed, clean, powerful convertible is a goer and a shower. An original, with just a few mods, and a piece of Plymouth history where they finally got it right, just as consumer tastes were changing. Either way it's a great straight liner, good curve carver, and nice piece of automotive jewelry to park in your driveway.
Exterior
The beneficiary of a matching Alpine White in 2017, paint is good, panels are straight, and we see no rust. The convertible top in black, is very nice and the rear window is glass, so no scratching here. This 1970 Barracuda was styled by John Herlitz, who had worked on the 1967- '69 Barracuda as well. It's a design that has been lauded since its unveiling, and one of its goals was to yield a shape that appeared sleek and lithe, to belie its intermediate underpinnings so that it seemed an appropriate alternative to a Camaro or Mustang. Success!
Interior
Bathed in snappy Black leather, seats are sleek high back buckets upfront, and a bench in the rear, sporting some tasteful tuck and roll and a plethora of buttons. This has been addressed in the redux and was performed by Legendary Upholstery. The center console races up to the dash between the buckets and has an inlay of wood appliqu which houses a wood handled L shaped Hurst shifter. Dash is very clean with original gauges that are all functional, and also includes some wood appliqu in the gauge cluster area. Door panels are as sleek as the car, with a wood accent in a delta form, surrounded by black textured vinyl, with Gran Coupe badging. A shout out to the trunk which has a new pan and is very nicely restored. The radio needs new speakers and the wipers will not park.
Drivetrain
In 2016 there was a complete rebuild of the Super Commando 383ci V8 engine at which time it was bored over .30. This is a numbers matching engine, and is topped by a 4-barrel Holley carb. The A833 4-speed manual transmission was also rebuilt at this time, and according to our crack decoder, was a factory replacement to the original due to a warranty issue. Additionally, during these rebuilds time was put aside to do the 8-3/4 3.23 geared conventional differential.
Undercarriage
Save for the occasional surface rust, and typical patina for this era car, otherwise structurally sound, and mechanically kept up to date. Power disc brakes on front, and power drums on the rear, which is supported by leaf spring suspension. Independent suspension is upfront. Dual exhaust in very good condition works its way from the mill rearward and yields a throaty sound when you press the accelerator.
A review of the build sheet, a broadcast sheet which has been decoded, and a fender tag decode proves all the claims the consigner has made to the authenticity of this Cuda. Overall nice condition, lots of power to wrap your foot around, and a convertible 4-speed...Oooooooh Barracuda!
