Description for Plymouth Road Runner 1968
Very sharp Road Runner now fitted with a period correct 426 Hemi 2x4 V8 under the hood! Complete restoration and rebuild in 2015! Blisteringly fast with tire shredding performance! Well executed with streetable 3.50 rear axle, easy shifting A833 4-speed manual transmission, MSD ignition, and upgraded 4-wheel disc brakes!Named for the popular Warner Brothers cartoon character, the Road Runner, Plymouth manufactured it with no frills and few amenities in order to save cost and weight on top of the Belvedere platform. It would have the cartoon's famous "Beep Beep" sounding horn as standard equipment of course! Known for being far less fragile than its competitors at Ford and Chevrolet, the Road Runner was preferred by those who desired serious street applications in high-performance cars, and is fabled to have been the favorite of Moon Shiners based on its power, light weight, ground clearance, and greater durability than its law enforcement counterparts. It would hit showrooms for the first time in 1968 with Plymouth engineers hoping to see 20,000 units produced. Their first year popularity actually achieved more than twice that figure! And today, they continue to be a favorite among MOPAR collectors and muscle car enthusiasts alike!
This nicely restored 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner Hardtop was recently refinished in Buffed Silver Metallic over a standard Black Vinyl bench seat interior during a restoration completed in approximately 2015. In proper fashion, all necessary components were removed including all glass to perform a professional base coat/ clear coat finish to the exterior. A new trunk floor and full passenger side rear quarter panel would be fitted in the process. All new window seals and soft body weather stripping were installed upon completion, along with new fuel tank, lines, all suspension components, engine & transmission mounts, driveshaft u-joints, and a upgraded 4-wheel disc brake system to bring this beast to a halt on command!
The drivetrain was replaced utilizing a fully rebuilt 1967 date-coded High Performance 426ci Hemi 2x4-bbl V8 in place of its original 383ci-4 barrel V8. Now producing well beyond the 425 factory rated horsepower, it should thrill any MOPAR enthusiast once shifting through the A833 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission! The rear axle was swapped for a Hemi correct Dana 60 by Strange Axles and fitted with 3.54:1 Sure Grip gearing! Performance additions include proper Chrysler cast aluminum 2x4 intake, upgraded Edelbrock Thunder Series 650cfm carburetors, ceramic coated long tube headers with 3" aluminum exhaust tubing, Flowmaster performance mufflers with polished oval exit tips, Milodon high capacity oil pan, Lakewood safety bellhousing, McLeod flywheel and clutch, MSD 6AL ignition with Pro-billet distributor, Pertonix Flame Thrower coil, Taylor Spiro pro 8mm wires, Optima red top battery, PRW aluminum water pump, Be Cool aluminum radiator, Gas-A-Just shocks, and much more!
As expected, this Hemi-powered Road Runner comes with only the general go-fast amenities to include dash tachometer, basic solid state AM pushbutton radio, heat/defrost, polished 15" Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in staggered Redline radial tires measuring 235/60 up front and 275/60 at the rear, front sway bar, 3-speed wipers, day/night rearview mirror, drivers remote outside mirror, front lap belts, and rubber floor mats. A set of Auto Meter gauges were added under the dash to better monitor oil pressure & water temp more accurately. Act quickly, we never keep these performance built Road Runners very long!!
