Found late last fall on the way home from a car show. This 67 Firebird was driven home by the previous owner in 1977. He started removing parts to customize and repaint it, uckily the project was abandoned before he got very far and it sat forgotten for 37 years. I really did not need another project car, ut how often doesa find like this happen ?I brought it home and put it aside while I worked on my current projects, ut I really should let this go to someone that can get started on it and bring it back to it's former glory. As with most classic car guys, already had a couple irons in the fire when this popped up, ut I just couldn't resist a fairly unmolested first year Firebird, nd a convertible one at that !
This car has 48232 miles showing on the odometer, hich I believe is original mileage. After all, his car was taken off the road and parked when it was only 10 years old, nd those of you old enough to remember the gas crisis years already know that none of us had a lengthy commute to work like many people do today.
I have literally not even cleaned anything on it or inside of it either. It's almost exactly as I found it, ust, irt and all. I did replace the deck lid with a super nice original 67 Camaro lid, s the one on the car was butchered by the previous owner. He's also to thank for that wonderful lacquer primer and nitro-stain work from the doors back.( I can only claim responsibility for the green epoxy primer, nd I have pics of the deck-lid in bare metal before I primed it )
95% of what was removed from this car all those years agois here and included with the sale. To my knowledge the only things missing are the rocker moldings, he cardboard glove box itself (glove box door is here), nd some small emblems and such. All of which is available from Year One, nd none of them are expensive items to replace. There is even a 5 gallon bucket of hardware and small stuff that I haven't even sorted through yet. To the best of my knowledge all of the hard to find parts are here, ncluding the always missing cocktail shaker counterweights for the trunk. There is also a very nice extra set of original taillights that are in addition to the set on the car now. The original seat upholstery is actually nice but needs a thorough cleaning as does most of the interior. The door panels you would replace for aquality restoration, ut the originalsare here. I did install fresh pointsand a condenserin the Spring, nd the 326 fires right up off of an alternate fuel supply. The gas tank looks clean inside (inspected with a scope camera), ut there is no fuel in it currently. The rubber fuel lines need to be replaced before fuel is put through the system. The last thing I needed was gas running down my driveway, o I have left it empty. I can fire it up off of 2+2 shot down the carb, nd the battery is only a couple years old from something else I had.
Now for the question most people want to know...does it have any rust? The answer is yes, ut not nearly as much as most of these cars. Most of the rust it does have, t had when it was put away 37 years ago. To do it right, ost would replace the trunk floor, runk floor extensions, nd the lower rear quarters from the wheel arch to the bumper from the body line down. In my opinion it would be a shame to do full quarters as I am of the mindset to leave as much original steel on a vintage vehicle as possible, ut to do it perfect you could certainly do full quarters if wanted. Rear shock mounts are fine, ub-frame mounts are fine, ockers are still solid and the floors are still intact but pitted. You could go either way with those...for a Barret Jackson car you would probably replace them, ut for a weekend driver, wire brushing and a few good coats of POR 15 may do it for you. Door panels and rear side panels are off as well as the cowl below the windshield for inspection purposes. I want the person that buys this car to be able to see clearly in to all of these areas to see that nothing is hiding from them. For this area of the country, his is as solid as they come unless you are buying a car that has already been completely restored.
