Description for Pontiac Firebird 1971
Do you want to be noticed in a BIG way while you are out for a drive?Do you want to know that your muscle car can match the acceleration, ornering, nd handling performance of cars 40+ years newer while still being a completely reliable everyday driver?
If you answered yes to both of these questions then THIS is the car for you!
400 engine / 4 spd / 10 bolt 3.42 rear / 4 wheel disc brakes / Power windows
This car started out as a solid 1971 base model Pontiac Firebird. It was then converted to a Trans Am clone by adding fenders, lares, ood, nd interior gauge cluster. I bought this car in 2011 and since then it has undergone a "Pro-Touring" transformation as I wanted to replicate the 1960's-1970's SCCA Trans Am Racing series look on this classic car. Since I never had any plans whatsoever to sell this car, span>I have spared no expense or taken any shortcuts with this car at all.
I have over $24,000 in receipts that come with this car that I have personally spent since having purchased in making this Trans Am clone a very reliable, mooth riding, nd performance inspiring car that is capable of handling long road trips!
This is not technically a show car, owever, t does receive more attention and break-your-neck looks than A LOT of the cars that you might see at car shows!(This certainly couldbe a show car with a little attention given to it however!)
This Trans Am clone is a very reliable daily driver that has a 1970 Pontiac 400 engine that is built (but not overbuilt). The car is very fast, ulls hard through the entire RPM range, ever runs hot, dles very well, nd will consistently get you 16-18 miles per gallon on the highway. The engine had been rebuilt when I bought the car so I am not entirely sure about the internals of the engine although I do know that it does have higher compression flat-top pistons, versized camshaft, nd worked Pontiac 6X cast heads. New engine parts since 2011 and within 6,000 miles: Holley Street Avenger 670 cfm carburetor with electric choke, arch serpentine belt system, SD Billet HEI Distributor, laster 2 coil, park plug wires, nd 6AL ignition with rev limiter, igh-flow water pump, hrome power steering resoirvor, ebuilt power steering gear, igh-torque mini starter, attery, raided fuel lines, nd valve covers. It also sports an Edelbrock Performer intake and Powermaster alternator. The engine is built very solid, ut you may see a small leak or two every now and then on your garage floor after a long drive.
For the rest of the drivetrain, he car has a recently rebuilt 4 speed transmission with a Hays Street/Strip clutch and Hurst shifter arm and handle. The 10 bolt rear end has 3.42 gears which is the perfect combination of performance and drivability for this car.
The exhaust is comprised of Hooker Headers, stainless steel "H" 2.5 inch exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers and stainless tips. The exhaust is veryintimidating and makes this car sound like the beast it is!
The entire braking system is brand new (less than 400 miles) to equal today's high performance cars capabilities. The car has been outfitted with four wheel disc brakes with true Corvette C5 ZO6 calipers with high-performance pads and 13" drilled and slotted rotors in the front and 12" drilled and slotted rotors in the rear. The front hubs have also been replaced with new Corvette hubs. All of the brake lines in the car have been completely replaced and converted to stainless steel. I have also installed a brand new master cylinder, rake booster, nd electric vacuum pump.
This is anexceptionallytight feeling Second Generation Firebird on the road! The suspension on this car has also been completely gone through and upgraded. I have installed a Hotchkis Sport Suspension system which included all new front springs and rear leaf springs, ear shocks, ie rods and sleeves, nd sway bars. I have also installed brand new Gen II subframe connectors and solid body mounts for the car. This upgrade has lowered the car around 2" for a more aggressive stance. I have also installed Competition Engineering Slide-A-Link traction arms on the rear. These are adjustable and can virtually eliminate any wheel spin if you set them for such capabilities. This car handles AMAZING compared to any other second generation F-Body I have ever driven. There is absolutely no flex in the body and there is very little body roll; you can take corners very quickly without worry.
For wheels and tires I decided to go with the LT-III E/T series wheel by Team III Wheels. These are replicas of the Mini-Lite wheels that were used on the SCCA Trans Am race cars and really top the car off. I have not seen any other cars with this rim yet. The rims are 18" in size and are wrapped in Nitto 555 ultra-high performance tires with most of their tread left (roughly 1000 miles on the tires). The front tires are 245/40ZR/18 and the rears are 285/35ZR/18. These tires grip VERY well and perform EXCELLENT with the suspension upgrades!
The interior of the car is in mostly great shape and has comfortable seats. For the interior of the car I have installed new carpet (with Dynamat to lessen road and exhaust rumble inside the cab), ew headliner with sun visors, ear windage tray, eat belts, enwood USB CD/MP3 deck, nd miscellaneous odds and ends. I have also changed out the original dash lights for LED replacements, ave added white-face vinyl stickers to the original gauges, nd have added a vinyl carbon-fiber look cover to the aluminum dash bezel (this can be removed if you desire the original machine-turned dash bezel look, ame goes with the white face gauge stickers). The dash does have a the typical crack in it, owever great quality dash pad covers can be purchased quite cheaply (less than $200) and installed very easily also if so desired. All of the gauges work except the tachometer which recently quit working on me. I have purchased a very nice 8K tachometer from Speed-Hut with built in staged shift light and "Trans Am" logo which will fit into the existing dash where the tachometer is currently for a "stock" look. This will come with the car for the new owner to install. Additionally, also have brand new inner window felts/weatherstripping that will come with the car for the new owner to install as well. I have a number of other new odds and ends (interior screw kit/new rubber trunk bumpers, ew tail-light gaskets, assenger side door latch, ew map pocket, isc. small stuff) that will come with the car as well.
Other things I have done to this car: All new Painless wiring throughout the car except for the the under-dash wiring harness, rand new tilt steering column (not remanufactured), rand new leather wrapped Lecara Trans Am steering wheel, rand new fuel tank with sending unit, he entire underbody has been undercoated, ew pinion seal and gasket in rear end, ew decals, nd other little odds and ends.
The body and paint of the car are driver quality in my opinion. The body work and paint was last on my list of things to do as I did not want to have a perfect paint job on a car and be afraid to drive it because of getting a rock-chip or something else. The car has a quality paint job on it with additional layers of clear coat and it has retained a very bright shine over the years, owever the door jams and trunk area were not painted at the same time of the last re-paint. The body of this car is very straight (please see pics). The blue stripe is painted on the car, t is not an adhesive sticker. The front end of the car has recently been gone-through and I have replaced any worn or incorrect body bolts.
Hopefully the pictures speak for themselves on condition of the body of the car as I have tried to capture everything as best I could. This car does have a couple areas where rust typically starts on these second generation firebirds as well as some rock chips but nothing that needs immediate attention, s very minimal, nd will be very easy to fix if the car is repainted again. Please keep in mind that this is NOT a fully restored show-quality car, t has been 10+ years since last paint, nd that it is still a 44 year vehicle. There is a small amount of what appears to be surface rust on the bottom of the outside rear fenders. The rust has not come through the paint (it has looked like this for the five years that I have had the car; it has not spread whatsoever). There are also small amounts of surface rust on the bottoms of both doors as water gets trapped in these cars throughout the years in this location. I believe that these areas could be taken care of quite easily by an enthusiastic owner or your local body shop. The trunk of the car is clean with no rust as are all of the wheel-wells and underbody of the car. The front nose of these 1970-73 firebirds are notorious for spider-cracks in the paint and this car is no exception. There is also a bit of what appears to be some sort of body filler in the driver-side of the front nose underneath the headlight. There is a very small dent on the roof of the car (I'm sure it can be pulled out easily), nd the passenger side of where the hood meets the front nose could be adjusted a bit also at the time of the next paint job. I recently had all new door hinges, river side door latch, nd door stoppers installed in the car and the doors and window glass completely aligned. The doors on this car do not sag or rattle like so many of these cars do, owever, his lead to a few paint chips in the process of re-aligning the doors. The driver side rear fender lip has a slight amount of damage to it in what looks typical of possibly a blown tire. It is not very noticeable and, nce again, an be fixed very easily if so desired by your body shop.
Side note: The numbers and stickers on the car are vinyl static-cling. They can be removed and re-applied if you so desire without damaging the paint on the car if you don't like the SCCA look.
