Description for Pontiac Other 1951

1951 Pontiac Chieftain - Factory Built Police Car - Survivor
DAILY DRIVER
How often do you see an actual, riginal PONTIAC Police trim car? This is a 1951 Pontiac Chieftain. It has the 268 c.i Straight Eight engine, nd a 3 speed manual transmission. The car has 59k actual miles. It was ordered for a Police department in Martinsburg, V, rom Dailey Motors in Martinsburg, V. Given the options it has, nd lack of markings, t was likely for a detective, r commanding/higher ranking officer. I have not had much luck digging into it's early history, o find out exactly who it belonged to. I was told possibly Martinsburg, D.
This is a great car to preserve, estore, r drive as is. You won't see another like it! This car has NOT been cut up, there's no holes or repairs in it from any previous equipment having been bolted to it. This car is basically as is how a Police agency would have got it before they added any equipment to it. Keep in mind, earses and ambulances turn up all the time, ut these don't! I have done a lot of searching, nd have not been able to find information on any others that were originally ordered as a Police car.
Details:
This car is still in as much of "as found" condition. However, have done a lot of work getting it back on the road and cleaned up. It still needs work and cleaning. As listed above, his car has a 268 c.i Straight Eight engine, t's had a fresh tune up and runs great! The charging system works great, nd is still 6 volt, nd has a new correct 6 volt battery. The engine runs strong, nd has a lot of power for what it is. The transmission is easy to shift, nd clutch does not slip. This car has all new brake lines, nd hoses, ebuilt master cylinder and wheel cylinders. It stops very well, nd doesn't pull to either side. I have also resealed the fuel tank and installed a new sending unit, s well as a new/rebuilt fuel pump. The car fires right up, nd doesn't knock or smoke. The steering, nd suspension feels very tight.
Most of the miles on this car were put on it between the times of when the car was new and the mid 1950's. According to oil change stickers, he car had 35k in 1955. It only had another 20k put on it between then and 1973, t had 200 miles put on it from 1973-1979 from which time it was parked in a barn and sat until I pulled it out of the barn in March of this year having only 57,980 miles on it.
The windshield wipers work, ll of the glass is in fantastic shape, nd is clear with no cracks or fogging. The windshield and back glass seals are in great shape and show no signs of dry rotting. The window's do not leak. All windows roll up and down easy, ing windows open and close as well. Every light on this car works, ncluding the dome light! Cigar lighter works as well. All of the doors open and close, nd don't rattle as the car is being driven.
The paint on this car is aged, nd has scratches, racking, hips and specs of surface rust in it, owever, it still looks nice. This car is VERY VERY Solid. The only rust I've found on this car is in the left rear dog leg area (pictured) and some bubbling above the rear wheels. The floor pans, ockers, runk, oors, enders, tc are all RUST FREE. There was some minor body damage at some point to the right rear quarter panel and it was fixed and repainted. Possibly sometime in the 60's. I do have a set of fender skirts, nd 1951 full wheel covers for this car as well.
The interior of this car is very rare as it is all imitation leather, nd has held up very nice for being 64 years old. This interior package was ONLY available as a Police trim option. All civilian sedans came with cloth interior by standard, nd did not have this interior option available. The interior trim code is 95, hich is not listed in any book. I have never seen another one with this exact interior in it. It's likely that this could be one of, f not the only one left surviving with this trim package. Also to note, n the firewall, ust behind the engine is written "Police Trim" which was used as the car traveled down the assembly line to let workers know this car would be trimmed as a Police car.
I have put 1300 miles on it so far since I put it on the road, nd have been driving it on a daily/regular basis mostly as weather permits - I've been stuck in the rain once with it. It has same as new radial tires on it. It seems to be very reliable, nd I wouldn't be scared to drive it a reasonable distance. I do have a backup electric fuel pump mounted to the frame rail which can be hooked up if something were to happen to the stock mechanical pump.
Keep in mind this is an unrestored, riginal 64 year old survivor. It still needs cleaning, nd other work done to it. It's not a restored car!
