Description for Pontiac Firebird 1979
1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Description1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
Rarely-ordered 4.9L V-8 engine (code L37) Muncie M21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission 1 of 1,590 Firebirds ordered with this engine/trans combination in 1979 Air-conditioning, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power antenna Heritage Brown exterior with original Camel interior Aftermarket tinted rear and side windows 62,637 miles on actual mileage title Original build sheet (found in pieces under one of the car’s seats)MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to offer this 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with low actual miles as stated on the title and a four-speed manual transmission and original build sheet.
This car left the Van Nuys, California assembly plant on the second week of April 1979 with the following equipment: shaker hood, Muncie M21 four-speed close-ratio manual transmission, 3.08 gearing and Positraction, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, air-conditioning, 4.9L V-8 engine, gold graphics package, gold aluminum “Snowflake” wheels, front and rear wheel spoilers, tinted glass, bucket front seats, Formula steering wheel, center console, fog lights, blacked-out taillights and power antenna.
Only 1,590 Firebird Trans Ams were built with this engine and transmission combination in 1979 and we were able to verify this car came with the factory 4.9 liter V-8. At some later point, someone applied the 6.6 TA graphics shown on the hood scoop.
Dressed in newer Heritage Brown paint, it shows very well, however there are a few minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. Complementing the paint are the so-called “screaming chicken” hood and B-pillar graphics, stripes and the gold “snowflake” wheels. The glass is in good shape overall but the windshield has a chip on the driver’s side, lower left. The side and rear windows carry aftermarket tint. The car’s urethane bumpers are in fine condition and the car rolls on BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, size 225/70R15 front and rear, surrounding those aforementioned “Snowflakes.” The wheels are in decent shape but have some patina. The body panels are straight and the engine bay looks decent overall. Battery appears new.
Inside, the original Camel-colored seats with a honeycomb-like pattern are in good shape. The horn is inoperative but the matching carpet, the headliner, instrument panel, Formula steering wheel, door panels, package shelf, mirrors, center console and shift lever are all in good shape. Completing the interior is a Alpine AM/FM stereo with cassette.
The Firebird front end was restyled in 1979. It also marked the 10th Anniversary of the Trans Am. In 1979, Pontiac sold 116,535 Trans Ams, the highest sold in a year. Up until the 1979 models, the performance of 400-equipped Firebirds could still be brought up to near pre-1970 levels by removing the catalytic converter and opening up the block off plate to make the hood scoop functional. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
Competitors to this car in 1979 included Chevrolet’s Camaro, Ford’s Mustang, Mercury’s Capri and Datsun’s 280Z.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 62,637 miles, which is believed to be actual. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, actual mileage title.
