Description for Pontiac Firebird 1978
This is an amazing example of an original Pontiac Formula Firebird. I'm listing this for a friend. This car is currently owned by the third owner who purchased it in 2013. It has always been garage kept by this owner and the second owner who owned it since 1988. It is kept on jack stands in a heated garage and protected with a car cover.
It was painted right before the previous owner purchased it in Florida. He lived in Florida and later moved to Pennsylvania. It has NEVER been driven in snow or bad weather.
When it was purchased in 2013 the tires had flat spots from sitting in the garage so new tires as shown were purchased. The car has been driven less than 500 miles since then and has been stored on jack stands to prevent flat spots.
This car still has the original numbers matching 400-4 barrel V8 and turbo 350 automatic with the 8.5-inch GM 10-bolt differential. It even still has the stock spark plug wires with dates marked on them. The rims are original and in excellent condition.
The car is rust-free and smoke-free and has been well-preserved. The trunk still has the original spare complete with original inflation device and jack as it came from the factory.
The interior of the car is 100% original. The seats have some stitching starting to come loose in some spots and the headliner has come down as is typical of these. The original headliner pieces are included in a plastic bag. The carpet is coming loose from dry rot in some areas and on the driver's side floor. The stock AM/FM Cassette stereo is still intact in working condition. It is in very usable condition as you can see.
The options include a/c which does work and still has R12 in the system. It has not been used since purchase by the current owner to test it and should be considered in need of refrigerant replacement. It does have the dual exhaust from the cat back that is believed to be original.
The car runs and drives perfectly and the brakes operate as they should. The cold air intake on the fender dry-rotted and was removed and is provided with the car to replace.
This is as original car as one could hope to find. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to own a piece of American history!

Sometime between 1978 and 1998 when the car was nothing but a used car, the original owner had it repainted. It was NOT painted recently or painted to cover up anything. Since 1998 when it was 10 years old, it has always been garage kept. That's why it looks as nice as it does.
The second owner (1998-2013) took it to car shows and displayed it as an original car. General surface rust is shown under the engine compartment that is probably from his garage storage in Florida. Someone else would have painted that to keep it nice looking (I would have), but he believed that it would take away from the originality. Except for the paint and tires, it's probably as original car as you could find that hasn't been restored like other examples we see for more money.
The reason it's being sold for less (the reserve is less than the BuyItNow) is because it's realized that if someone was going to show it today they would want to detail the engine compartment and will need to put in new headliner and carpet as well as possibly needing some attention to where seat seams are splitting (mainly driver's seat).
This car was purchased by my friend with the intention of taking it to shows and enjoying driving it for Sunday afternoon drives. Due to some health and family problems, he's realized that it sits on jack stands more often and he's decided he needs to part with it.
You might be a buyer who just wants a good example to drive and enjoy and doesn't worry about placing AACA first class. Or you might want a restored one, but don't want to spend that money. Here's your chance to buy one for much less and put very little in it. The fact that it's been garage kept since it was just a 10-year old used car when many a 20-somethings would have driven it like there's no tomorrow is somewhat of a rarity. Yes, there are better examples of Formula Firebirds. I don't dispute this. There are also many more worse examples.
If you'd like to ask questions, please do. I hope this gives you more information and clarifies the criticism of my description. In no way did I intend to mislead anyone. I'm not a dealer or big time seller. I just sell an occasional vehicle from my personal collection and in this case offered to list this for my good friend.
Thanks!
