Description for Pontiac GTO 1966
This 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible occupies some seriously rarified automotive air. Not only would it be considered an undisputed member of muscle car nobility simply by virtue of its identity to begin with, but it also features its original engine to go along with its offering of open air driving exhilaration, and comes complete with PHS documentation to prove its authenticity. On top of that, it's also a bona fide award winner - garnering an impressive collection of Best in... Class hardware in a variety of car shows. The GTO started off as an option package for Pontiac's Tempest before receiving the distinction of becoming a separate model the very year this one came out, and was counted upon to capture a share of the younger market, which had an undeniable infatuation with speed. You notice right away that this is a broad, sturdy-looking car, with an engine compartment capable of handling a big block with ease. The Montero red paint on this classic replaces the crème color it began with, providing more than its share of flash and even coloring sitting underneath a great clearcoat that produces a strong shine from all angles. It received an extensive, ground-up restoration to look as it does, and when the time came to put the pieces back together, that also was done with care, as this is a very well-aligned car from front to back. Its extensive array of clean chrome, ranging from the front and back bumpers to its trim, also adds to the strong impression this Pontiac makes from the first glance. Sitting up above, its power black vinyl convertible top is in good condition and raises into place for protection against unforgiving weather. Inside, a very clean black vinyl interior awaits. It's been restored while retaining its original configuration, so both the wide bucket seats up front and the bench seat in back feature the same textured surfaces they began life with and show only light wear. There's fresh-looking black carpeting sitting underneath, punctuated by a pair of branded GTO floor mats up front. One very nice dividend of the GTO's ample size is the generous amount of legroom in back - this will make for very happy passengers when you take this beauty out on the road. Just beyond the woodgrain Pontiac steering wheel, the quartet of gauges in the cluster are surrounded by woodgrain paneling, joined by another trio sitting to the front of the center console. The spacious trunk area is impressively tidy, lined with new-looking fabric and a full size spare sitting off to the side. Very much in keeping with Pontiac's original performance-minded intent, it's original YS code 389 cubic inch V8 sits underneath the hood, its power output amplified by the trio of 2-barrel carbs sitting on top -GM's revolutionary Tri-Power configuration which is also factory correct for this car. Sounding very healthy and pulling strong, the engine mates with a Muncie M21 4-speed transmission for a great, "hands on" driving experience (the original TH400 is available as well). In back, the 3.23 Safe-T-Track limited slip rear end strikes a great balance - providing admirable off the line acceleration with reasonably low highway speed RPMs that would be completely out of the reach of more drastically equipped muscle cars. Outfitted with power brakes and power steering, this is an easy-driving, open air classic that you'll actually look forward to getting behind the wheel of, and while it comes with the original Rally I's mounted with Firestone Redlines, it sits on a set of 15" Cragar rims outfitted with BF Goodrich T/A radials that still show nearly all of their tread. With its outstanding vintage looks and power, this 1966 Pontiac is a real find. Call today!
