Description for Pontiac GTO 1968
Since the early 60's, Pontiac Motor Division has been routed in performance with the theory; "What wins on Sunday, Sells on Monday". Pontiac championed drag strips across the country with their big iron Catalina Super Duty's and Bonneville's on a consistent basis. In 1964, Pontiac went one step further and the formula was simple: Put a big, high horse power motor into its smallest body, then the tempest; they called it the GTO. The GTO is consider the first muscle... car and it kept competing manufactures scrambling to keep up with Pontiac's performance. This created the horsepower wars between the Big Three and within General Motors. The mid to late 60's considered the most exciting era in American automotive manufacturing where restrictions were loose and the engineers were encouraged to build cars with brutal performance and distribute them to the awaiting American public. Pontiac's GTO is revered by many as year after year the GTO remained at the top of the food chain. GR Auto Gallery is pleased to offer this exciting, fully restored 1968 Pontiac GTO. 1968 was an important year as the car went through a complete redesign for the eager customer base. GM shortened the wheelbase, and 1968 was the first year for the popular Endura bumpers. The car offered was delivered new by Jones Pontiac Co. of Lancaster, PA equipped as follows: 400 4bbl HO engine, 4 speed manual transmission, saf-t-track posi rear end, AM / FM Radio with electric antenna, tape player, rear window defog, covered headlamps, hood tach, rally wheels, console, clock, exhaust tips, remote deck lid release, disc brakes, soft ray tinted glass, luggage lamp and redline tires. Today, after an extensive restoration the car is stunning in all areas and remains in its original configuration. The original 400 V8 engine has been replaced with a 455 with mild cam upgrade running at 9.5:1 compression. The performance of this car is amazing and the presentation is stunning. The GTO remains an icon in American automotive history and quality examples such as this will always remain sought after. It has it all: 4-speed Muncie, signature rally wheels, hood tach, power and sound. A great opportunity offered by GR Auto Gallery. The car is documented with its original build sheet, protect-o-plate, original build sheet, original delivery inspection, service history as early as 1971, original owener history etc.
