For sale at the St. Louis Car Museum is a rare Turbo-Charged, 1981 Pontiac Trans Am loaded with options! This classic muscle car displays a highly desirable color combination, WS6 Performance Group, T-tops, air conditioning, Turbo cast aluminum wheels, and more! In addition, this particular example has a two-owner history with only 70,571 miles on the odometer. A fantastic Trans Am that represents the last year for the iconic 2nd generation design!!About Pontiac's Second Generation Trans Am Model:
Pontiac had an excellent run with the basic design of the second generation Trans Am that started in 1970, but all good things must come to an end with 1981 marking the final year of this icon. Luckily for automotive enthusiast, Pontiac decided to go out with a bang. The Turbo Trans Am offered an eye sight into the future of performance, with technology that seemed so new then and is now common place in our everyday drivers. Sadly this year also marked the end for Pontiac manufactured engines under the hoods of our beloved rides, shortly after April of this year GM would result to "Corporate engines" which are just Chevrolet blocks, for all their vehicles, except for the Turbo Trans Am. The horsepower ratings of the 4.9L Turbo engines where a realistic 200 horsepower and 340 Lb/ft of torque. The previous year's 210 hp rating seemed a bit optimistic, and the performance numbers seemed to support this. Even at 200 hp, this would still be the highest horsepower rating for a Trans Am until the debut of the Tuned Port engines in 1985 and not much lower than the famous 6.6 Liter big blocks from years past.

Also enhancing this Turbo T/A are gold Special Edition Gold graphics and gold anodized interior aluminum trim, and upgraded Panasonic AM/FM/Cassette audio system. Original, low mileage examples like this one don't come around often, with collectors the world over snatching up every Trans Am available! It's no surprise that Keith Martin of "Sports Car Market" magazine declared the Trans Am to be one of the best investments in collector cars for many years now.
The Trans Am featured here has only been restored in an as-needed fashion over the years resulting is a largely original vehicle overall! Some cosmetic paint restoration was required to remedy a few worn areas, but it retains a genuine survivor quality throughout. It originally sold new from Town & County Pontiac-Cadillac in Greensburg, Pennsylvania to William Mears on July 22nd, 1981 with just 10 miles on the odometer. He would have it Tektor rustproofed at 17 miles at the dealership and it would remain in his possession, garaged for the next 38 years! As with many classics, it was left largely unused for the latter part of his ownership, so he elected to sell it to a Canonsburg, PA enthusiast in December 2019 with the sincere intentions to put in back on the road again.
He would begin with a full fluid flush and refill of all drivetrain components, new filters, new gas tank, new alternator, rebuilt smog pump, new water pump & thermostat with gasket; all new brake calipers, rotors, & pads, new brake master cylinder, brake lines, & proportioning valve; new radiator hoses, new BF Goodyear Radial T/A raised white letter tires, transmission cooler lines, and shocks at all four corners! Upon its arrival to the St. Louis Car Museum, we continued his efforts with a new fuel pump, a rebuild of the carburetor, new carb fuel lines, fresh spark plugs, new air conditioning compressor, orifice tube, v-belt, and retrofit adapters which was charged with R134a to blow cold once again; new hood insulation, new outer window weather strips, repairs to the headliner, and an overall complete detail inside and out!
We are very happy with the results to a car showing only 70,571miles on the odometer. This is a rather rare car, supported by Pontiac Historical Services which indicated out of the 33,493 Trans Am's built, only 9,662 would be Turbo cars with T-tops for 1981. Once you factor the WS6 Performance Package, its long option list, and very favorable factory color combination, that production number gets considerably small! This example also comes with the original dealer order copy showing an factory MSRP of $12,613.23, all original owner's manuals, service & warranty paperwork, factory build sheet from underneath the driver's seat, PHS documentation, recent service records and some dating as far back as 1982, and the original GM/Fisher T-top storage bags.
Given the nature of the market we strongly urge any interested party to act quickly as Trans Am have been steadily increasing in price over the last several years and show no signs of slowing. If you have ever wanted a beautiful example of one of America's most iconic muscle cars, Do Not Hesitate!
