SEMA 2016: Ruby Fire Trans AM won The Car and Drivers Top 10 cars at Sema Day 1. The 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM was on display at Valspar Paint’s booth, coated in the brand’s Prospray paint. Deep-red in colour, the paint suits the Trans Am’s shape well. The interior is an indulgent chestnut-color, and the body sits on low-profile tires with modern American Racing basket-weave wheels. Built by The Custom Shop of Flanagan, Ill., is no stranger to SEMA. The Wargos began showing their incredible custom builds at what is recognized in the industry at the biggest event of the year in the late 90s. In 2001, SEMA awarded The Custom Shop the Meguiar’s Shine Award and, in 2008, Best Truck – both vehicles painted in Prospray Finishes, a Valspar Automotive brand. Wargo’s ’77 Trans AM at the 2016 SEMA show was finished entirely in Prospray colors including Ruby Red (M7-27700), Wilderness Candy (UC-03), Mystical Pearl (FX-708) and Spectra Flair (SF-1-18). She has been in in a climate controlled garage throughout our ownership. We have had numerous other projects that have kept us too busy to do anything with her other than admire her beauty since arriving. Understand that this car was built to be a show car, which would be trailered (“Trailer Queen”) to and from. Not a driver. The Builder did an amazing job making this car what it is, but since he built it to be a show car he set the ride-height as low as it can go and placed the largest wheel/tire package on it, which causes the front tires to currently rub the the inner fender wells if turning the wheel >~80% either way. This can be aleaviated by the moving the bottom of the adjustable coil over shocks on all four corners, we have not, it is still in full show setting as the Builder placed them, at the very lowest mounting position. The car tracks the road okay, but if you want to turn it into a driver, it will need a professional front end wheel alignment. It appears the Builder only did a tape measure rough-in alignment to get it to SEMA. Since the Builder built it with the Trailer Queen concept in mind, he used the original GM ECM unit that came with this LS1 (from a ‘04 GTO ~50k miles) and utilized a Stacked Injection system, which limits the tuning to “Alpha N” mode only. This takes a very experienced Programmer to get it right for driving it more than around the block. If you want to make her drivable for any distance, this can be corrected by replacing it with a Holly Terminator (https://www.holley.com/products/ls_power/ls_efi_systems/parts/550-903T) and then it can be fully and easily programmed, by a Tuner, you, and will self-learn as you drive. The Builder utilized a used LS1 and stated that they only renewed the top end, from the cam up. He has provided many jpg pictures on CDROM of the entire build process including the engine work. We have no idea about the bottom end’s condition, but we just noticed that it does have a tiny engine oil leak at the rear of the oil pan. We are not sure if it is the pan gasket or the rear seal. We don’t have the time to mess with it. It has two batteries, one mounted within each rear quarter panels and accessible from the trunk. These are run in parallel doubling the normal amperage for use of the stereo system and accent lighting systems during a car show without having to run the engine. The car has not been damaged in any way since completion by the Builder in 2016, but a few small paint chips have occurred, nothing major. We have touch-up paint from the Builder included, we have not touched anything up. It only has glass-pack type (perforated stainless tube w/packing) mufflers on it and it sounds loud and mean. The Vintage A/C system was never charged. This is all we found. We are very detailed-oriented. We build new replica ’65 Cobra Roadsters for donation to St. Jude Children’s Cancer Research Hospital Gala auctions and do full restorations on old classic cars, truck, and motorcycles. We hope this gives you more clarity on the details of this car. |
