Carrera 3.2 (1984—1989)
With the 911's future ensured, 984 saw the launch of a replacement for the successful SC series. It was the model year 1984 911 3.2 Carrera, eviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. The 911 3.2 Carrera was the last iteration in the original 911 series, ith all subsequent models featuring new body styling with new brake, lectronic and suspension technologies.
A new higher-displacement motor, 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat 6-cylinder, as utilized. At the time Porsche claimed it was 80% new. The new swept volume of 3164 cc was achieved using the 95 mm (3.7 in) bore (from the previous SC model) combined with the 1978 Turbo 3.3 crankshaft's 74.4 mm (2.9 in) stroke. In addition, igher domed pistons increased the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1 (9.5:1 for the US market). New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were fitted. The 915 transmission was carried over from the SC series for the first three model years. In 1987, he Carrera got a new five-speed gearbox sourced from Getrag, odel number G50 with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. This slightly heavier version also featured a hydraulically operated clutch.
With the new engine, ower was increased to 207 bhp (154 kW; 210 PS) (@ 5900 rpm) for North American-delivered cars. Factory times were more modest: 0—60 mph time of 6.3 seconds for the US version.
The brake discs were increased in size to aid in more effective heat dissipation and improved oil-fed chain tensioners were fitted to the engine. To improve oil cooling, finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987, ith the addition of a thermostatically controlled fan.
Driving refinement and motor reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to an L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel-efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map and chip programming from October 1986 further improved the power to 217 bhp (162 kW; 220 PS) (@ 5900 rpm) for North American delivered cars as well as for other markets mandating low emissions, ike Germany.
Three basic models were available — coupé, arga and cabriolet. The Carrera is almost indistinguishable from the SC with the external clue being the front fog lights that were integrated into the front valance. Only cosmetic changes were made during the production of the Carrera, ith a redesigned dash featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.

This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera left the factory in September of 1987 and was delivered new to the United States of America in Venetian Blue Metallic over a white/cream leather interior. It has the incredibly desirable Getrag G50 5-Speed manual transmission. It came to us with no factory books or first owner records, o our description of the car is based on the second and third owners receipts, arFax/CarProof reports and what we've experienced driving the car, mechanical and visual inspection.
As per CarFax/CarProof records, his 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera coupe was sold in 1994 at auction in Montgomery, labama with just 800mi on the odometer. Records show it then was registered in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami, lorida right up until the year 2000. Next our records show it was then registered to a new owner, r. Ken Blanchard of Portland, regon on August 5th, 000 with just 60,205 miles. The Carrera remained in Portland under Blanchard's ownership until it was purchased by Mr. Geoff Snow of Victoria, C Canada on March 6th, 003. Snow owned the car up until mid-2015 when we purchased the car directly from him.
Receipts for service under Blanchard document extensive mechanical maintenance. Compression during his ownership was 150-160 across all cylinders. Lines and gaskets were changed, V Joint repacked and resealed, ower door lock system fixed and steering adjusted. Overall very thorough service work for just a few years of ownership. Under Snow the Carrera received a new turn signal and two new hydraulic hood lifts, il changes, heel alignment, ut no major services were documented.
We were told that while in Florida the owner filed an insurance claim and received compensation after leaving his sunroof open during a rainstorm. The interior of the car does appear to have some restoration, pecifically the carpeting, nd the seats and door panels appear to have been re-dyed.
The doors, ood and engine cover all have their original factory stickers. The paint is patina'd with rock chips, nd a few areas where paint has flecked off. The lower right side of the windshield is showing some early signs of corrosion, his is typical of this generation of 911. The rear window edge (also on the right side) also shows some signs of corrosion developing as well and some attempts at repair and repaint.
Mechanically the car runs and drives well. A mechanical inspection revealed that the compression is low across all cylinders; indicating the need for a top-end re-seal.
We see two potential avenues for the next caretaker of this 911 Carrera Coupe: 1) You could restore the car to original specification, s the values have been climbing and this is a stunning original factory color combination; or 2) It would be an excellent candidate for a Backdate/Outlaw 911. With some mechanical TLC you could have a very good driver. With a new paintjob and interior you'd have a stunning Carrera coupe.
These late 80s 911s are increasingly desirable as they represent the last iteration of the original "911"design and model designation. The 87-89 series 3.2L cars equipped with the Getrag G50 5-Speed are the most desirable of that model type. They are excellent driving cars with plenty of power (and potential for increased power with tuning). It is rare to find a solid 911 Coupe with so much potential. Fully restored and/or well-preserved, ow mileage late 1980s 911s are nearing six-digit sums. We rarely find these cars for sale anymore and think this car represents a great opportunity for someone to bring back to it's original specifications or Backdate to a 70s RS look as many people have been doing lately (Sharkworks, inger... etc).
We want to have the vehicle run its course in the auction process. Having said that, ny realistic offer that is acceptable will end the auction early. If you would like to send us an offer, lease do so, ut do not ask what our reserve is. We value the eBay auction process immensley and feel it gives everyone an opportunity to participate in the bidding.
