Description for Porsche 912 1968

When Porsche first introduced the 911 to succeed the popular 356, t quickly realized that it was lacking an affordable model to replace the buyers who had been purchasing 356s. While a 1600 SC coupe cost DM 16,450 at the time, he new 911 cost a whopping DM 22,900. The demand for a lower-cost Porsche based on the 911 was met when the European 912 was released in 1965. A year later, he 912 was introduced to America, nd quickly became a bestseller.

The 912 was discontinued after 1969, nd replaced with the 911T, lower-cost version of the 911. The 912 model made a return to the US again in 1976 with the introduction of the 912E. The 912E was based on the 1976 911 chassis, ut incorporated the motor from the Porsche 914 2.0L. While the engine components were nearly identical to the 914, he 912E incorporated a L-Jetronic fuel injection system specific to that model year car. Unfortunately, ince the car was only made for a single year, eplacement fuel injection and exhaust parts are very difficult to find. The 912E indeed is an interesting and somewhat rare car, s there were only a little more than 2,000 ever made. However, ecause of their relatively low powered engine and the difficulty in finding spare parts, hey are not highly sought after.

The original early 912 was met with much enthusiasm for buyers who were looking for an affordable Porsche. The 912 received almost all of the updates and benefits of the 911 without the high price tag. The price of an early 912 with a four speed transmission was DM 16,250.

The primary difference between the 911 and the 912 is in the drivetrain. The 912 uses a four-speed gearbox (five-speed optional), nd a four cylinder 1600cc engine that is derived from the 356SC engine. Although virtually similar to the 356SC engine, he 912 engine was detuned from 95 to 90 HP. The comparable 1965 911 has 130 HP.

Despite the 912's absence of horsepower when compared to the 911, he 912 proved very popular, articular for club racing events where speed and power are not necessarily the most important factor in reducing lap times. The 912 with its smaller and lighter engine is much nimbler than the heavier 911. The 912, ith a weight of 970 kg (2134 lbs), s a full ten percent lighter than the 1080 kg (2376 lbs) 911. Almost all of this extra weight on the 911 is located in the larger, eavier engine in the rear of the car.

The extra weight of the 911 meant that it is a bit 'tail happy' and tends to exhibit a bit of oversteer, specially around tight corners. In an attempt to compensate for this, he factory placed two 25 lb weights inside the bumpers of the 1967 and 1968 911s. Needless to say, he nimbler 912 didn't need this extra weight because it was much better balanced.

The motor mounts in the 912 were also different than the 911, hich led to better weight distribution. The 912 engine was much shorter than the 911 engine, nd thus was mounted farther forward than its 911 counterpart. In order to adjust for a lighter car too, he 912 incorporated suspension components that were specifically tuned for the lighter weight and better balance of the car.

The car I have for sale appears to have been originally Bahama Yellow (cool color!!), ut back in 1978 the car was stripped down to be repainted in it's current white and was never finished, ow mind you back in 78 this was just a old used car so there is some over spray here and there and well it's been sitting since 78 in a old shop so it has new dings and scratches, he paint work was never finished and they didn't do the best job to start with so now's your chance to put it back to it's original color and rebuild from there.

I was told it ran when it was parked...ok I was actually told the motor was rebuilt and only has 7 and a half miles on it, ut I have no verification of that. I have not tried to start the car as with it sitting for so long I'm sure you'll probably want to pull it and put is some fresh seals and give it a full tune up before going all silly and just putting in a battery and turning the key.

I believe I have a good portion of the parts, few of the parts I know I do not have are the front windshield, he outside door handles, oor panels (have some misc pieces) as a bonus I do have the original rear window..so yes, t's a hard window targa which I personally like a lot better than the soft windows, ut that's just me. I mocked up the front and put the headlights into place along with the turn signals and other bits just to show the parts, ut of course they weren't bolted in and will all be packaged for you. One of the headlights does have a broken lens, he taillight and turn signals are good used..but probably won't qualify for concourse restoration. I will include everything you see in the pictures and more, uch as the bumper guards and a bunch of misc items, hey will all need restoration as once again they were taken off in 1978 and just stored. If there are any particular parts you'd like to see I'll be happy to let you know if I have it and shoot you a picture. The car does appear to have had some new floors put in back in 1978, here does not appear to be any other rust on the car that I've been able to find, ront suspension area is nice, torsion'sarea's all look solid this is a great base for a full restoration.

If you are going to be in the Sacramento, alifornia area I can try to arrange time for you to come and view it, ut all sales will be done through Ebay, o I will not end the auction early unless you are trying to pay me some above market price you can feel free to shoot me offers, ut we both know these cars are in high demand..

I do have a clean California title in my name, o shipping international is not a problem. I am not a Porsche expert if you are that is awesome contact me through Ebay and if you seem like a legit buyer and not just a Tim Wester you can come and see the car and the parts that go with the car.

I am not a shipping agent, f you need a shipping quote on this car a few resources that I have used in the past are (Domestic- Jay at Jaysautotransport.com, e is a shipping broker, y from zip code is 95628 tell him it's not a running vehicle to get an accurate quote).
