Description for Porsche 356 1960
Here we have a car that left the Factory as a special car. Chassis number 113507 left the Factory with Super 90 engine 801409, transmission 40238, and the interior was red vinyl with corduroy inserts, all of which are still with the car. The car was also originally paint code 6001/741 Slate Gray. So when this car rolled off the assembly line it was Slate Gray with red/cord interior, a killer combo. Add to that it was a Super 90, this was one special car. The only other options on the car were chrome wheels and red kokomats. All of this info is confirmed on the scan of the Factory Kardex (see pics). When 113507 was new it was as good as you could get from Porsche because the Super 90 had effectively replaced the 4-cam Carrera motor. According to Karl Ludvigsen in his book Excellence Was Expected,"There remained a need, especially in the American market, for a Porsche with more punch. It was filled with the introduction of a completely new engine for the 356B, the Super 90 or 1600S-90, replacing the former Carrera de Luxe."
We recently woke this car from a sleep and took it promptly to our mechanic who did the following:
- Re-built the carbs
- Re-built the fuel pump
- Installed new points in the distributor
- Installed new condensor
- Installed new battery
- New brake cylinders
- New brake hoses
- New brake master cylinder
So we now have a car that starts and runs, moves forward and backwards, stops and has good motor compression (120 on all cylinders). While I did drive this car around the block and you can drive it on the trailer, don't pack your bags yet for that cross country trip. This car still needs lots of sorting in stuff like the shift linkage and the in-operable e-brake, among other things. We basically wanted to make sure all the systems were operational but figured the new owner would want to have his mechanic go through the car for the final sorting.
At some point the original color of Slate Gray was painted over in re-sale Red, I guess we can blame it on the 80s. But you can still see the slate gray on the top of the dash. The dash top of Slate Gray should give you an indication of how cool this car will be when restored, Slate Gray over red, with corduroy inserts. Anyone who has ever had corduroy in a 356 knows it is heaven not to have to sit on a hot seat in the summer. While the car will be very cool when restored, whoever painted the car red also did some very amateur rust repairs, if you look at the pics you can see some of the 7 deadly sins of Backyard Porsche Restoration, just think bondo and pop rivets! So expect to do some metal work before you enter any concour events. But the good news is once you sort the mechanicals you can drive the car while you restore it, a rare thing to enjoy the car as you bring it back to its former glory. And this car has plenty of glory under that red paint, and in the engine bay, Super 90! In the end you will have a special car with a stunning color combo of Slate Gray over red interior, with a matching #s engine and gearbox so this is truly a car that you can restore to the highest degree, don't miss out because un-restored cars like this are getting few and far between.
