Original California car Renegade conversion (Tuned Port Injection 350 CID V-8 under the hood in place of factory 4.5L V-8) Porsche five-speed manual transmission One of 17,669 928 models made between 1978 and 1982 Grand Prix White (code 908) exterior and Marron (brown – code 40A) interior Power steering, power brakes and power windows Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with CD changer Aftermarket rear wing and aluminum wheels Car comes with owner’s manual, warranty and maintenance guide, Blaupunkt stereo owner’s manual and stereo schematicsPorsche exclusivity combined with Chevrolet reliability form the basis for this hybrid of a different stripe. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1979 Porsche 928 Renegade. Renegade Hybrid is a company that has provided other engines, namely Chevrolet small block V-8s, for installation in Porsches since 1983. This one has a 350 CID V-8 with Tuned Port Injection out of a fourth-generation Corvette (1984-1996).
Car has maintenance stamps from Max Dial Porsche/Audi of Inglewood, California, starting on November 15, 1978 through April 24, 1980 through at least 1,786 miles. The next two mileage entries are at 33,400 miles on May 23, 1983 and 42,603 miles on August 19, 1986. This last entry is stamped by Lomita 911 Service, Inc., in Lomita, California. A Mr. Widmer from Indiana bought the car on March 3, 2007.
Dressed in Grand Prix White (code 908), this car’s paint is in very good shape, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The glass panels are in great shape and the rear and side windows between the B- and C-pillars are tinted. All of the cars lights, including the pop-up headlights, are in fine shape. All body panels are straight and in good finish. The car rolls on Fuzion ZR1 tires, 225/50R16 in front and 245/45R16 in rear surrounding slotted and chromed factory aluminum wheels. There’s an aftermarket rear wing affixed to the rear hatch.
The heart of this example is its small block Chevrolet V-8, provided by Renegade Hybrids, out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Renegade takes all of the good things from Porsche – handling, braking and styling and marries them to powerful, reliable motors like the famous Chevy V-8, which has been a favorite choice of buyers for a long time; they’re plentiful and inexpensive to repair and maintain compared to the original Porsche powerplant and the aftermarket parts are easy to find.
Since the 928 was designed to accommodate a V-8 engine, these conversions are relatively straightforward; many parts are not needed. Making the conversion brings multiple benefits, most important being cost. Repairs or replacement of a Porsche engine can be very expensive. After the conversion, there are no more $1,400 clutch repairs, $3,500 timing belt replacements or $500 water pumps fixes on the original Porsche engine.
Inside, the marron (brown) (code 40A) seats are in decent shape with some visible wear. The matching carpet is in great shape. The matching headliner, dashboard, steering wheel, door panels, mirrors, center console and gearshift lever are all in good shape. In the dash is a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with CD changer mounted underneath the dash. Driver assist features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows. The speedometer works fine, however the odometer is inoperative and a few trim pieces are missing.
Since its inception in 1949, Porsche has manufactured only seven front-engined models, four of which were coupes, including the 928. The car has the distinction of being the company’s only coupe powered by a front-mounted V-8 engine and the company’s first production V-8 powered model.
Car comes with owner’s manual, warranty and maintenance guide, Blaupunkt stereo owner’s manual and stereo schematics.
Competitors to this Porsche in 1979 included Chevrolet’s Corvette, Datsun’s 280ZX 2+2 and Ferrari’s 308 GTB.
Current mileage on the odometer shows 109,235 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
