This car came to me as an abandoned project and, unfortunately, I'm abandoning it again as I already have several 911's undergoing full-scale restorations and this is just one project too many. It's a solid starting point for a restoration or hotrod build and I hope it finds a good home.
The odometer shows 111,992 miles which is believed to be correct. The car was delivered from the factory in the classic Guards Red paint over Cork interior color scheme and is well-optionedwith a sunroof, electric windows, sport seats, cruise control, fog lights, and the CR radio option.
The previous owner had stored the car outdoors under a tarp for the last several years with the motor and transmission out of the car. I had the motor and transmission bolted back together and installed in the car to make it easier to transport. This is not currently a running and driving car but if you're looking for a project, this is a great place to start.
Following is some detailed information about this 911.
Mechanicals:I have verified the engine and transmission in this car to be numbers matching with Porsche Cars North America. A Certificate of Authenticity has been ordered and will be provided to the new owner.
As stated, the car is not currently a running and driving car.
When I found the car, the intake and exhaust had been removed and the car had been stored outdoors under a tarp. The tarp was not completely waterproof and the engine had been exposed to water. The engine does turn over by hand but anyone purchasing this car should assume that the engine will need work.
The transmission was not stored outdoors but had been stored in the owner's dry garage. According to the him, the transmission had been freshly rebuilt when he acquired the car and has not been run since. I have no way of verifying this but I believe it's likely based on my conversations with the owner and the fact that the transmission had been stored indoors. The transmission does shows signs of recent work including being marked "no oil" by the drain plug. Please make your own judgement and bid accordingly.
The car is surprisingly complete for a project and much of the best stuff that usually goes missing is still present including the original Fuchs wheels, a full set of gauges, the 3-spoke steering wheel, fog lights, spare tire and more. In addition, the car comes with numerous parts that had been previously removed including a partial exhaust, rear axle shafts, and sway bars. Many will be usable, some will not, but they're all included with the sale.
Exterior:The car is a southern car and it shows. Even after being stored outdoors under a leaking tarp, the car is remarkably dry and rust free. The cars shows no signs of any significant prior accident damage, the gaps are straight, and the car presents well with nothing more than the minor bumps and bruises you'd expect on a 38 year old restoration project.
There are two small areas where the paint had failed and exposed the galvanized metal underneath. We lightly sanded those areas and covered them in black primer to prevent corrosion. These areas are located on the driver-side rear quarter panel (approximately 6x8 inches) and on the roof of the car (approximately 4x6 inches).
There is also an area of the passenger side roof where a ladder had fallen on the car causing minor damage. The previous owner repaired this with a small amount of filler but it was poorly done. We sanded this down also and covered the entire are in primer just to be safe. To be clear, this was very minor damage and a very minor repair.
The car maintains its original glass although there are some chips in the windshield. All lenses, emblems and trim are present. This car has not been scavenged.
Interior:The interior of the car was stripped by the previous owner in preparation for restoration. The good news is that the floors are now fully visible and it's easy to verify that the car is free of rust. Much of the interior was stored inside the car over the years and is included with the sale. While not perfect, at least some of it is restorable including the valuable sport seats which will need new foam and upholstery.
