The 914 program was initially intended to be a joint venture between Volkswagen and Porsche. Unfortunately, VW pulled out and Porsche took over the project. Ferry Porsche intended the 914 to attract younger drivers. The 914-6 models were very limited and exclusive. Only 3,300 cars were built worldwide. Regrettably, due to the design, most of these examples were either irreversibly modified or simply rotted away. Very rarely does such a dry and straight example remain well preserved and maintained.

This 914-6 was built in April of 1970 and sold new on September 15th, 1971 by Norman Scott Porsche + Audi of Houston, Texas. It was ordered with the following factory options:

US Equipment

Fog Lights

Tinted Glass All Around

Seat Cushions

Correct and factory original 15x6 Fuchs (all 5) were installed.

The first owner, per the original factory Maintenance Record booklet (see pic) was a Mr. Douglas U. Stewart of Baytown, Texas.

Eventually, the car made it to Southern California and between 2014 and 2015 the local owner had this 914 cleaned up. Most of the mechanical work was entrusted to Callas Rennsport of Torrance, California. Callas is a highly respected Porsche specialist both locally and across the country. Work performed included:

Remove engine, transmission, tins, and all other drivetrain related parts

Inspect/repair all tins and shrouds before refinishing

Refinish engine tins in correct/original color

Replace all hoses, clamps, and fasteners (including plating)

Reseal both chain housings

Replace both cam O-rings and gaskets

New timing chains and rails

Install Carrera chain tensioner kit

Rebuild original Weber carburetors (work done by Paul Abbott)

Major service performed

Fan belt

Spark plugs

Air filter

New oil return tubes

Replace rear main seal and crank pulley seal with flywheel bolts

New intermediate plate gasket

Reposition the rocker shafts

Reseal top of the engine including thermostat O-ring

New oil pressure switch

New breather stack gaskets and hoses

Replace all sealing washers on engine

Complete engine gasket kit

Replaced, rethread, and correct any/all damaged studs on engine

Repair gearbox oil leaks/reseal

New throttle bell-crank bushings

New CV joint gaskets

Clutch and flywheel inspected and cleaned

Repair and ceramic coat the exhaust system and heater boxes

Install rebuilt correct 914-6 brake calipers (all 4)

Brake system flush

Adjust ride height, align, and corner balance

Replace oil lines and hoses

In total, over $32k was invested with Callas.

The goal was not to restore, but preserve and bring everything up to top running condition so the owner could use it on vintage touring events. Basically, everything but the exterior paint and interior was refurbished. While the mechanical work was being performed, the following items were also completed:

Install rack and pinion, brake system and suspension (all refurbished)

Detail undercarriage including removing old undercoating and repairing any dents

Paint suspension parts

New Michelin XWX tires

Strip, clean, and re-chrome front and rear bumpers

Repair and paint front valence

Check and adjust shift linkage (including replacing bushings)

Replace fuel lines

New front trunk seal

Check all lights and repair wiring/bulbs

Repair pop-up lights mechanism

Flush brakes (just completed)

Another $16k was invested in final assembly/preparation. In total, nearly $50,000 has been invested.

This 914-6 looks fantastic. This isn't one of those over restored examples that are just cleaned up to run across the auction block. This car was lightly used throughout its life and never abused. The low miles also helped preserve it. It has a great honest look and authentic vibe. Most of the exterior of the car was repainted many years ago and it was a top-quality job. It has held up great with no shrinking or prep issues. In fact, there are hardly any signs of use. There are a few tiny chips from use, but fairly insignificant. Everything on the exterior looks tidy and fresh. The Fuchs are wearing their original anodized finish and are near perfect with no curb rashes. They are wrapped in new Michelin XWXs, which have the perfect vintage original look. The brakes are also new.

The interior is equally as nice and very original. The seats are in very good shape with just light signs of use. The carpet shows the lightest signs of wear. The targa top is in perfect condition as well as the Targa rubber seals along the windshield. The door panels are nice with no cracks or fading. The dash is in excellent condition with no cracks or warping. All the gauges work properly as well as the correct Blaupunkt radio. Even the original Repa seatbelts are in excellent condition. The interior light works.

The front and rear trunks are in great shape. They have their original carpet and rubber pieces. The vin badging is correct and unaltered. The engine compartment is nice looking with fresh engine tins. The battery tray and "hell-hole" show no signs of rot and are original. The entire car is remarkably dry, straight, and solid.

This 914-6 is an absolute joy to drive and the engine makes glorious sounds just behind your head. The carburetors are tuned just right and the car starts easily with no fuss or popping. The power is strong in this light little body. Acceleration is quick and immediate with no hesitation. The steering is nimble and spot on with no pulling. The shifting is excellent for a 914 with no grinding or slipping. The brakes have recently been serviced and they have excellent stopping power. After representing several top quality 914-6's over the past couple years, this is truly the best driving example I've experienced. Several marque experts have poured over this car and were all equally impressed at the honest and superb survivor condition.

This Porsche would be a welcome addition on most vintage touring events and an absolute blast. It would also be ideal driving to local shows and cruises. You could even consider competing at your local concours events.

This 914-6 comes with the original owner's manual, Blaupunkt radio manual, original factory maintenance booklet (very rare), correct full-size spare with new Michelin tire, jack, factory tool kit, and all recent refurbishment records.
