Description for Porsche 928 1979
Hello and thanks for looking at my 1979 Porsche 928 California car with 5 speed manual and 68,210 original miles. I have personally owned 5 928's in my life. I am not bragging, I am just saying I love this model and know a little about them. This 928 along with my 1978 928 are the very best examples of the breed. I saved this 928 for myself because it was one of the best original examples, and fun as heck to drive. This is an 8 out of 10 for this car in my experience. IF you are happy with a level 8 you are ready to go, IF you want a 10, you do not have far to go. I've owned this beauty for over 21 years. I purchased the car when I was working in San Diego California from a very nice Man who had just had the car completely inspected, serviced, and detailed to give to his daughter for her birthday, but she wasn't good with a 5 speed so he sold the car to me. I drove it for several weeks in California and then transported it back to my home in Indianapolis, IN. I bought the car with 63,393 miles and have driven in just under 5000 miles in those 21 years, the odometer is at 68,210 as of today after a short ride after taking photos. The car has NEVER seen Ice, snow or salt during it's entire existence. It has always been garaged and properly cared for, and it shows. There is no major damage, no signs that it has ever been in an accident, and the only rust on the car is a little surface rust in the battery tray from some VERY MINOR battery acid damage, I took a close picture for you to see. Otherwise the car is 99% rust free as it came from the factory. The underside of the car is very clean, the jack points are all in excellent condition and solid. All of the tools, jack, spare tire and light bulb kit are complete and in good condition. The original interior is in very good condition with the usual wear for a car this age (see pics). The power seats work as designed. The driver power window works fine, but the passenger window goes down only about an inch and stops. I replaced that window motor about 8 years ago, and it looks like it is time for another one, or for someone to refurbish this one. All of the gauges work fine, except the gas gauge is intermittent (typical 928 issue). The odometer, and trip odometer both work fine. The brake pad sensor warning light has been on for a little while, but all brakes function great with no problems. There may be a need for pads in the near future. Recent service includes a rebuilt cold start valve (another common problem), timing set, oil and filter, and air filter replacement. The oil in the car always looks very clean, almost like new, and looks that way today when you check the oil. There is a very minor leak that you can see in the pictures of the oil pan that has been that way for the entire time I have owned the car (over 21 years) BUT I have never had to add between changes, It is a very minor leak. I've have had the same piece of cardboard under the oil pan for years and it still isn't saturated. I change the oil in the car every 5 years (each time less than 1500 miles since the last one) with full synthetic whether it needed it or not. I have never changed the timing belt for 2 reasons. The previous owner did it right before I bought it and I've only put about 5000 miles on the car since then. IF you are a maintenance kind of person, you will probably want to change the timing belts. Keep in mind that this is a "non-interference" type engine, so even if the timing belts failed there would be no engine damage. The clutch pulls the car just fine, smooth shifting in all gears, and of course you have to be stopped to go into 1st and reverse (Porsche decided not to put a synchronizer in 1st gear on their 928's). It is easy to get used to the process. The engine runs great, it has never failed to start for me as long as there is a good battery. The AC system actually worked very well until about 2 years ago. It is still the original R12 and I chose not to have it upgraded in case the next owner wanted to keep it completely original. All of the AC components are as they came from the factory. The engine runs great and pulls the car quite well cruising down the road, or pushing through the turns. She is a joy to drive, and get the looks everywhere I go. You might want to fit it with new "proper size" tires as these are over 21 years old. They still hold air, but if you are driving any distance, you will want new lower profile tires. I enjoyed the larger size tires because they give a VERY VERY SMOOTH DRIVE down the highway on long trips. My understanding from my Mechanic is that if you want the car lowered for better looks and handling, you can adjust the springs for a lower ride height, but again, I used the car as a cruiser. If I need to smoke tires I get out the Hellcat... The wheels are in almost perfect condition with a few little dings, but no major road rash. The stereo was replaced years ago and sounds OK with an amplifier and sub woofer in the rear. NOTHING WAS MODIFIED with the amp and sub woofer installation, they can easily be removed if you want to go back to a more stock stereo. The body is beautiful and straight. The paint is in 7 out of 10 condition, there are several little dings and scratches, and there is some fading, but she looks very good from a few feet away. Silver is the original color and it appears to be the original paint. I cannot find any evidence of paint lines or over spray. It looks like the original paint, but I can't guarantee it. IF you are looking for a 98% stock well cared for low mile Porsche 928 that you can enjoy as is, or even go the extra mile to make it show quality, THIS ONE IS IT! I've included a video of the car running and a walk around for your viewing pleasure, and I ENCOURAGE any serious buyer to make an appointment with me to see the car.
