Porsche launched the 944 for the 1983 model year as an evolution of the 924 and positioned it as its entry-level model for most of the 1980s. It gradually expanded the range with a mid-level 944 S and a flagship Turbo model, and it released the long-awaited convertible for 1990. Production of the coupe and convertible variants ended after the 1991 model year and the 944 was replaced by the 968 for 1992.
