Description for Renault LeCar 1983

This auction is for a 1983 Renault LeCar.

As evident in the pictures, this is a very clean and solid car, with a lot of recent refurbishment.

The previous owner invested a lot of time, money, and effort into the car, but he had a change of priorities before it was done and was unable to finish his project. I acquired the car from him with specific intention to complete the car and then offer it for sale.

Here is a list of the major work done by the previous owner...

  • New body paint
  • New seat upholstery
  • New windshield
  • New exhaust system
  • Rebuilt engine
    • New pistons, rings, and liners
    • New rod and main bearings
    • Cylinder head resurfaced
    • Valves ground
  • New brake pads, shoes, and wheel cylinders

Here is a list of the major work I completed...

  • New Weber 32/36 carburetor with compact air cleaner
  • New trim paint
  • New radio and speakers
  • New battery
  • Refurbished alternator
  • New door button surrounds
  • New hood emblem
  • New rear emblem (shown with an R5 GTL emblem but can swap if the buyer prefers)

Along with the items listed above, I spent over 50 hours sorting out and completing issues with the car that were not addressed or not addressed properly by the previous owner.

Through the refurbishment work, most of the emission control system components were removed, including the cylinder head air injection components and the catalytic converter. The car also had a non-factory air conditioning system in it when I got it, which was not complete and functional, and I removed that system and reverted the car back to original configuration under the hood and in the cabin.

When new, this was a base model LeCar, meaning it had manual brakes (no vacuum booster), manual washer fluid pump (yes...a foot pump on the floor beside the clutch pedal), non-opening rear vent windows, no radio, no cigarette lighter, no dash light dimmer switch, base seat coverings, and no carpeting. With the restoration work, black carpeting was added, a radio, speakers, and antenna were added, the seats were upholstered with nice fabric, and the windshield washer system was upgraded to an electric pump system.

The car has slightly more than 38k miles on it, with about 500 miles on the rebuild according to the previous owner. With the rebuild, new carburetor, and removal of emission system components, it has good power and acceleration compared to the stock setup. It starts, runs, drives, and stops okay, but it needs some fine tuning of the carburetor to be ideal. The idle is not as good as it should be, and there is a slight hesitation during acceleration. The other item I am aware of that needs addressed is that it likely needs a front end alignment.

At this point, I have run out of warm weather and do not have space to tinker and store the car over the cold months, so it is time to sell.

Overall, this is one of the nicest LeCars I have seen in decades. The body is solid, the paint is nicer than factory new, the interior looks great, and the mechanicals are all strong.Having said that, although a lot of time and money has been invested in the car over the last few years to make it what you see, it is not perfect, and please understand that the car is over 35 years old. As well, it has not been on the road for a few years, other than about 10 miles of driving I have done just recently to confirm operation.

There may be a few more miles on the car between now and when the auction ends, but no more than 20 beyond what is shown in the picture.

I am offering the car as-is with no warranty or guarantee.

It is up to the buyer to arrange pickup or transport.

Full payment due within 7 days, but I can store the car for an additional week or two if you discuss with me.

There is a reserve set for this auction...please do not ask me what it is....bid what you feel it is worth to you.

If you have any questions, please ask me ahead of placing any bids.

On Oct-20-19 at 16:57:41 PDT, seller added the following information:

Just to clarify...the car did not have a factory air conditioning system, and it was retrofitted with a dealer option kit, which was in the car when I got it. I removed that dealer installed air conditioning system, so there is no air conditioning system in the car now. If the buyer is really interested in that dealer installed system that I removed, I would consider selling it after the car sells and would show the buyer how everything goes back into the car.
