Description for Studebaker Commander 1955
This is a daily driver 1955 Studebaker. A good solid survivor, n good shape, t is mostly original. I've owned the car for 15 years and have driven it for around five thousand miles. We have used it primarily for parades, ocal and regional shows, nd I drive it to town a few times a month to get groceries and the mail.
Car has a nice original-appearing interior (redone in mid '90's), resh automatic transmission (redone in 2013), any engine improvements (in 2013, 014, nd 2015) including new fuel pump, ebuilt carburetor, ew front wheel bearings, ew drive shaft yoke/carrier, ew u-joints, ll new brakes including wheel cylinders and master cylinder, ew water pump, ew single exhaust with a glass pack muffler, ew Firestones, ew 8v. battery, ew points-plugs-condenser, omplete cooling system flush with new anti-freeze, omplete starter rebuild, lus a lot of other parts replaced in the last 15 years.
When I replaced the water pump (3 months ago) I used a new old stock (N.O.S.) pump that I fear had really dried out seals, tc. because it’s noisy again. Pumping water just fine but it makes noticeable noise now and then. There are a number of mechanics online that will rebuild the pump. With the car purchase I’ll send along a used core that you will be able to send in for rebuilding if you so desire.
Also the new fuel pump doesn’t seem to hold gas in the line when the car is shut down for a few days. To cure this I bought a new electric fuel pump which I will not get installed but will put it in the trunk for the purchaser. But, f you just pump the heck out of it while cranking it over, t will start just fine. The choke was cleaned and rebuilt when the carb was reworked and the choke works good.
The car is presently a 15 footer as the paint has become pretty dull on top of the hood and trunk although I did have the roof repainted last year (exact color match - the car is Pima Red with a Sonora Beige top) and I think a younger man could probably buff out the dull on the hood and trunk. When younger I've buffed out cars much worse. Incidentally, he car was totally repainted in 1985 by a previous owner.
The chrome is nice and many parts were re-chromed by the most recent past owner. The rear bumper is so beautifully re-chromed it almost makes you drool, nd all stainless has been polished by the guy who repainted the roof last year.
Negative things about the car: Some devices do not work such as clock, adio, ome light, tc. All are fixable. The car has typical Studebaker rust, ut not much of it as it has been shedded for the last 35 or 40 years at least.
Feel free to email me with any questions. This is a car I never figured I'd sell but I'm getting up in years and don't get the enjoyment out of it like I used to. My own children do not want it as they have nice modern cars and SUV's with many creature comforts. But the car is a head-turner and I receive compliments on it nearly every time I drive it. I actually drove the same make and model in high school/college and proposed to my wife in it. We've been married now for 54 years and sentimentality aside, he and I would prefer our much newer Prius if we're going anywhere very far away.
The car has won many trophies (24 before I bought it) and has appeared in "Turning Wheels" (Studebaker Drivers Club's" periodical) inside back cover of their 2-94 issue. I have won 3 or 4 People’s Choice trophies and Best of Show trophies (in the early 2000's) since I bought the car 15 years ago. I have shown the car locally a few times and have won a trophy each time.
I have an older webpage with some photos that were taken a few years back plus a few I just added. I do not often update that website but it might be interesting to a potential buyer ( CLICK HERE FOR WEBSITE. ).
You would be buying this car "As Is" and "Where Is". I'll take you for a ride in it and you or your agent can completely check it out at our acreage. I would help with the loading at our acreage in Estherville, owa (by appointment, f course).
This car is a nice classic that we've babied properly!
