1923 Studebaker Special Six Touring Beautiful and rare frame-off restored ’23 Studebaker Special Six Touring! Documented ownership history since new! Original drivetrain and equipment! Many additional features! First time offered for public sale since new! Following the end of the Studebaker-EMF agreement in 1918 to which Studebaker produced and marketed their vehicles. they were finally free to focus 100% of their attention on producing their own automobiles. Attempting to establish a name as a premier builder of high end automobiles. Studebaker introduced three new vehicles in 1918 to compete in different market segments. A couple years later and the Studebaker line-up was beginning to stand out. By 1923. the Light Six EM was a very stylish entry-level car powered by a 207ci Inline 6 with a host of standard features. The mid-size Special Six EL was a more aesthetically forward thinking car than its competition and the Big Six EG proved to be very successful. with its powerful 354ci Inline 6. robust suspension and large. commanding presence. It was a well-known fact that 12 of Arizona’s 14 counties proudly gave their sheriffs Studebakers for the exceptional performance and durability. Furthermore. Studebaker was delighted to show at the 1924 New York International Auto Show a 1918 Big Six that had over 500. 00 verified miles! These early 1920s Studebakers remain collectible because while expensive. they proved to be a value among luxury touring cars. The limited number of surviving cars has also helped the enthusiasm of saving these South Bend masterpieces! We are very excited to offer this 1923 Studebaker Special Six Touring! The car is finished in a striking shade of Ruby Red with orange pin striping over Black vinyl interior. The car is fitted with its correct EL 289ci Inline 6 (date coded May 21st. 1923) with LS-2 updraft carburetor and 3-speed floor-shifted manual transmission. Standard features on 1923 models included a one-piece windshield with built-in tinted visor. cowl lamps in the lower windscreen corners. automatic wipers (now manual). taillights. step plates. aluminum kick plates and walnut steering wheel! This car has several notable extras including full side curtains. front/rear Biflex bumpers. front map light. rear grab handle. rear interior light. Spartan SOS-A2 horn. underhood oil lubrication can. tinted wind wings. rear footrest. door pockets (drivers locking with full toolkit). gas tank observer. “L” & “R” specific lug nuts. burled dash. rear- and side-view mirrors. Studebaker motometer. rear mount spare and more! The car rides on pinstriped disc wheels with 32×4 Lester 6-ply whitewall tires. The car was sold new to a Mr. William Henry Harrison Nolan of Gilmer. TX on Thursday. June 6th. 1923 by Sam Wood of Wood Motors in Marshal. Texas. The ownership grapevine has led us to believe that this car was purchased as the result of Mr. Nolan’s small paving and dump truck business winning a bid to pave a majority of the gravel roads in and around Gilmer in 1923. This business victory came at the same time that his wife announced she was pregnant with their first child! With all of these prosperities. he felt he had earned himself a more stylish way to travel about his freshly paved town. Mr. Nolan and his family owned the car for 43 years. taking the car on numerous long-distance road trips. most notably thrice to Pikes Peak via Redwood Forest. Yellowstone and The Grand Canyon. Mr. Nolan’s grandson noted that the top never came down. which helped preserve the original beveled rear window. Much enjoyment was extracted before selling the car to Roy W. Smith of North Little Rock. Arkansas in 1966. Restoration was not started and the car sat in dry storage for the next 40 years before being sold to Robert Flippin of McAlister. Oklahoma. Mr. Flippin did an extensive frame-off restoration on the car that began in the early 2000s and was finished around 2007. Mr. Flippin had been restoring cars for 45+ years and it was certainly something he was passionate about. While the original motor was sent off to Glen’s Machine Shop. the local outfit in Oklahoma. the body. frame and suspension were all restored to like-new condition with no replacement parts. The Liberty Light lenses. brass top fasteners. and sextet of chrome hood latches are all original to this car. Furthermore. all upholstery was done with Mr. Flippin’s own two hands and a sewing machine. By the time the rebuilt motor had found its way back into the car. the body had received a fresh coat of acrylic enamel paint in the original color of Ruby Red. This restoration is fully photo documented to include the disassembling and reconstruction of the car. By mid-2007. the car was again in showroom new condition and ready for use. The car traveled less than ten miles before Mr. Flippin sold his “honey baby” to the previous owner and passed shortly thereafter. leaving this Studebaker as his final gem. This owner contributed another three miles before calling us. The functional odometer shows 27. 88 documented original miles; the trip odometer shows 13. 7 since completion of the restoration. The four main bearing 50 horsepower Inline Six starts promptly and is significantly more powerful and smooth than the average 1923 car. The car comes with the aforementioned hard copy photo album of restoration photos. as well as a display board. two vehicle tax forms from 1923. a 2004 bill of sale. several 2007 awards. Studebaker jack. Studebaker painting. Artistic custom fit car cover. side curtain bag. headlight and Motometer covers and a print copy of an original Studebaker advertisement. The car remains fully functional today; all lights work and the clock keeps accurate time. According to serial numbers. this car is number 32. 54 of 36. 93 Special Sixes built in 1923. in five different body styles and one of only a handful of documented and correct Touring models.
