BIRTHDATE: This is a 1950 Studebaker Champion Regal Deluxe Business Coupe and my book says built at South Bend, IN. Only 849 were produced. 1950 Studebaker Champion car production was 270,604 units so at 849 Regal Deluxe units this was the least produced model in 1950 making it genuinely scarce as to how many survive today.

MODEL: This Regal Deluxe model has the highest trim features offered by Studebaker on Champions . The “Regal Deluxe” designation includes: stainless interior door panel trim, stainless steel windshield trim and stainless rocker panel moldings which you can see are on this car. This car had the rubber gravel shield on the rear fenders which are degraded now.

THE STORY:This car just came out of 43± years of storage. The Brother of the Previous Owner advised this car came from a car lot at Fargo, ND (North Dakota means little salt was used on their winter roads). and kept in storage until now. I was told the deceased Brother bought it as a young man and had dreams of restoring it. Seems all that he ever did was to take it apart, leave it alone for years and so you see it today, still apart and now some parts missing. Current owner has grown too old to work on it. Why am I selling? I have other Studebakers to work on and complete. I want to get this one to a Fan of Studebakers who can bring it back, restored or rodded. Priced right.

BODY: I have looked at lots of Studebakers over the years and usually in this Midwest climate they are badly rusted in the lower 12± inches. The usual rust thru areas are in the rear of the front fenders, around the vent openings, at the bottom front fender tear drops, rocker panels, floor and in the trunk floor. Generally and overall there is very little rust out in these areas. Amazingly very solid for a car that has sat so long. Californians may disagree about my assessments. This is pretty decent condition for the Midwest given our winters, environment and salt used on roads. Understand: there is surface rust and some rust thru on this car. I do not see any broken bars or cracks in the lower grilles. However, it is my opinion is that any rust repair will be manageable compared to other vehicles of similar age and repairable. Make your own determination.

The floorpans are intact and I banged my fist on them. They sound solid and most of the original floor coating is intact on the inside. The rockers are still there but they have surface rust on the undersides. The trunk floor has some spots where there is rust thru; mostly in the wheel well which has a few areas at the bottom rusted thru. I see the trunk lid drip rail has rust thru on the left side and will need replacement. In the pictures you are looking at body panels that have some dents but are amazingly solid. Pics of the door bottoms show them good and they feel solid. I wish all the Studebaker doors I have ever looked at were this solid.

The ‘Bullet’ is nice, no visible dents or cracks. The hood, roof and trunk lid have not been “jumped”. There is a spot in the center of the rear deck (between the trunk hood and rear window where something happened and it is slightly depressed. Includes the front bumper, both bumperettes and bumper frame which I secure in the car for shipping.

The hood and trunk are loose and hinges are missing. The hood and trunk lids will be tied down and secure for shipping. There are probably a lot of little things I am missing or forgot to describe so ask if you have a particular question.

INSIDE: Pretty typical old car. Complete dash, half way decent steering wheel, seat partially ripped apart some but the frame and cushions are still excellent for rebuilding. The headliner is mostly gone but the headliner hangers are still there. MOST IMPORTANT even though it is ripped up a bit the rear deck cover is intact. The wood frame and deck is straight and I think the remaining cloth is there so a new cover can be created using it as a model. The stainless steel trim on the door panels is intact so they’ll fit onto new panels. You’ll note the flat glass on the driver door and windshield are cracked. The passenger door glass is broken and gone. The Herculite curved rear windows (Hard to find for this model) are undamaged and appear in good condition.

ENGINE: Forget it. The old 6 is probably not useable without a total rebuilding. Nothing known if it’s stuck or if it turns, wiring was gutted and parts missing, no radiator. Engine still hooked to the transmission. I replaced old duct tape with new tape on the engine openings which had been covering them for decades.
