These 2nd generation SR5 pickup trucks cemented Toyota’s reputation in the U.S. as one of the most reliable small pickup trucks built. To this day, hey are still considered one of the most desirable by enthusiasts and collectors. They were also the beginning of the legendary 22R engine that has been recognized as one of the best Toyota engines. Plus, ith their ½ ton load capacity, -speed automatic with overdrive transmission, nd great fuel economy; they are quite practical. Most of these vintage pickups saw a lot of hard work back in the day and as a result, ery few have survived. However, very once in a great while, local survivor comes available.
This Toyota longbed was purchased new at Frank Toyota of National City, alifornia on October 19th, 981. It was ordered with the following factory options:
Window package (vents and sliding rear window)
Power steering
Cloth seat trim
Dual chrome sport outside mirrors
Mudflaps
This SR5 spent its entire life in Southern California. The first owner lived in La Mesa, A. He kept this truck for 25-years and put around 80,000 miles on it. The second owner also lived local (El Cajon, A) and only kept the truck about 4-years and added another 25k miles. It was then sold to the current owner in 2010. This owner also lives in La Mesa, A. He is a long time vintage car enthusiast and has spent years in the classic VW world. This made the perfect weekend vintage hauler.
All three owners took meticulous care of this Toyota. No service was overlooked and extensive records were kept. We have a thick 3-ring binder full of nearly every service as well as a detailed fuel/oil logbook. It appears that every few thousand miles, his truck got a tune-up and oil service. The current owner recently replaced the brake master cylinder and also did a major service. Also, his owner just spent over $1,500 doing a complete transmission overhaul/rebuild, hich included a new torque converter. Finally, e also spent nearly $1,100 on new front brakes, ll new shocks, e-packed wheel bearings, ew alternator/regulator, nd all new drive belts.
Over the past 5-years/25k miles, his owner has invested nearly $4,000 to make sure this truck was in great running condition.
Just looking at the condition, t is clear that all three local owners loved this truck. The paint is mostly original (verified with a paint meter) except for the hood and right front fender. In 1992 (at 42k miles), he original owner had a mishap and ran into a brick planter at his house. He insisted that the top local shop perform the repairs with all factory Toyota parts. The repair bill was $3,500 so the insurance company gave it a salvage title as they refused to pay that much to fix a 10-year old pickup truck. The owner still had the work done regardless of cost. The only mechanical damage was the radiator. If it weren’t for the records, here are no visible signs of repairs. The truck is really in stunning survivor condition. For a good part of this truck’s life, t wore a bed shell, hich certainly helped protect it from weather and wear. As a result, he bed is in fantastic condition with no signs of rust or rot. The glass is all-original as is most of the trim. It appears that this truck was always covered and/or garaged. Most 3-year old trucks don’t look half this good let alone one that is nearly 35-years old.
The interior is truly remarkable. The cloth seats look like new. The dash is perfect with no warping or cracks. The door panels are near flawless with no scuffing. The carpet is fresh and new. Even the original AM/FM/MPX Stereo looks and works like new. All the gauges and lights also operate properly.
Of course, he best part is the way it drives. Everyone can relate to driving an old pickup truck. The difference is this still feels like new. It starts smoothly and shifts with ease. Everything feels tight. The panel fit is perfect. The build quality is very high. Combined with the excellent maintenance history, his Toyota will probably be on the road for many more decades.
It has current California registration and also passes the California strict smog test.
This Toyota pickup comes with the original owners manuals, uel log book, nd most receipts since new.
