Description for Toyota SR5 1986
1986 Toyota SR5 Turbo 4x4 Pickup • California Truck with very tidy undercarriage • Rare 2.4L factory SOHC turbocharged I4 engine (22R-TE) with electronic fuel injection • 4x4 with five-speed manual transmission (code 151F) and 4.10 gearing (code G292) • Black exterior (code 202) and black cloth and gray vinyl interior (code FZ11) • Power steering and power brakes • Factory Toyota Tacoma black-and-silver alloy wheelWhat other modern vehicle became such a stalwart sales success without a model name? For about 20 years, between dropping the Hilux tag and the Tacoma’s release, Toyota’s Pickup sold especially well, even though it had no official moniker. This one, with a rare turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the Sport Rally 5-speed package, is available at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This solid SR5 example comes from San Jose, California and is in great overall original condition! Made in February 1986, this truck’s black exterior (code 202) is in overall very good condition, as are its windows and lights. The truck’s bodywork is solid, its engine bay is extremely tidy, there’s a factory battery that looks good and the cargo bed is in good, original order. There’s even the factory Turbo badge on the tailgate and the rest of the exterior looks great! This truck rolls on Firestone Destination LE2 radials, size P265/65R17 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a factory Toyota Tacoma black-and-silver alloy wheel. The wheels are good condition while the tires are in very good order. New-for-1986 were independent front suspensions on all Toyota pickups.Under the hood is a 2.4L factory SOHC turbocharged four-cylinder engine (code 22R-TE) with electronic fuel injection. Backing this motor is a five-speed manual transmission (code 151F) and a 4.10:1 rear end (code G292). The turbocharged 22R-TE (sold from late 1985 through 1988) were extremely well known for their durability, decent fuel efficiency and good low- to mid-range torque. The 22R has a large displacement and a strong block, but its comparatively long stroke and restrictive head limit its use in high revving applications. Driver convenience features include power steering and power brakes.Inside, the bench seat with black cloth seat surfaces and gray vinyl bolsters are in overall very good order and lend the truck an air of ‘80s authenticity. The gray carpet is in similar condition, as is the matching headliner. The typical Toyota period-correct two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and looks great. The instrument panel has a full array of gauges with a background graph paper motif. The instrument panel and inner door liners are still in very good order, as are the floor-mounted shift lever and the transfer case controller. Rounding out the interior is a Sony AM/FM stereo with CD player. In North America, the popular option package, the SR5 (Sport Rally 5-Speed), was colloquially used as a model name for the truck, even though the option package was also used on other Toyota models. The next year saw the introduction of a turbocharged option, the 22R-TE, perhaps due to increasing competition from Nissan who already offered a V-6 truck at this time. The solid front axle was swapped out for an independent front suspension/torsion bar setup in the 4×4 model in 1986 and optional automatic differential disconnect for the front differential (an alternative to automatic locking hubs).Competition to this Toyota in 1986 was Chevrolet’s S-10 4x4, Dodge’s D50 4x4, Ford’s Ranger 4x4, GMC’s S-15 4x4, Mazda’s B2000 4x4, Mitsubishi’s Mighty Max 4x4 and Nissan’s Hardbody 4x4 Pickup. The SR5 designation was the most desirable Toyota trim level on the market when these trucks were new. Sturdy, reliable, go-anywhere – these were some of the truck’s hallmarks. If you had one when you were younger or if you always pined for one and missed the opportunity when they were new, here’s your second chance. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to look this one over. VIN: JT4RN63B1G0035536This truck is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 157,844 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt California title.
