History
The car was delivered new to British Leyland Motors in Galveston, exas in the fall of 1975, nd I believe sold new in Houston. The last Houston-area owner was a member of the Texas Triumph Register, he local Triumph club. He sold the car to a gentleman in Dallas in 2005 with 53k on the odometer. The immediately previous owner kept the car for nine years and put less than 500 miles on it during that time. I purchased it last year and have also used it sparingly. I believe that I am the fifth owner of the car, ut unfortunately do not have its full history before about 2003. What I do know is that it is a completely rust-free, traight, early perfect low-mile TR6 that has been well loved during its lifetime. It's a truly fantastic example.
Mechanical Condition
It starts, uns and drives beautifully with all systems functioning exactly as they should. The state safety inspection is current, nd I would not hesitate to take it on a tour or driving event immediately. Recent servicing has included the following:
-Fuel system overhaul: Professionally rebuilt, et up and tuned Stromberg CD175 carburetors; fuel pump and filter; soft fuel lines
-Ignition tune up: Plugs, ap, otor, oints & condenser, oil
-Brake master cylinder, S rear brake cylinder, rake fluid flush
-All new fluids - Castrol GTX in the engine, rad Penn gear oil in the transmission & rear differential
-Water pump
-Rocker cover gasket
-Alternator
-Battery
There are no oil leaks from the engine or transmission, ut there is a weep of gear oil from what appears to be the pinion seal that started after the gear oil was changed. Beyond that, here are not "typical British car leaks" on this one. The engine is solid, he transmission shifts smoothly, nd it doesn't smoke or make any weird noises. The clutch is firm, ut engages with no chatter or issues. There is no discernable play in the crank pulley that would indicate any thrust bearing issues with the motor.
The steering is tight, ut will need the rack mounts replaced at some point. Included in the sale are all of the parts from The Roadster Factory to go through the steering system: column bushings, lex coupling, -joints, ack mounts and rack boots.
The brakes stop the car confidently and the friction lining is nearly new front and rear. I replaced a leaking rear wheel cylinder and bled the system within the last 100 miles. Everything works perfectly.
All of the electrics work - wipers/washers, ights, lower fan, linkers, orn, tc. No "Prince of Darkness" nonsense with this car.
It rides on a set of 15 x 5.5 Shelby Cal 500 5-slot mags that are in excellent condition. The tires have good tread, ut are old. It comes with the set of original steel wheels and trim rings, ut those will need to be blasted and powder coated prior to refitting them if you so choose. I like the look on the mags, nd they have been on the car for probably the past 15+ years.
Body/Paint Condition
This is simply a beautiful TR6 with nearly perfect Java Green paint. It is a distinctive color already, ut the quality of the finish really sets it off. I get thumbs up and people wanting to talk about the car whenever I take it out. The color is sublime.
It was repainted in the original color sometime I assume in the late 1990's, s the paint work precedes my known history on the car and it's too nice to be much older than that. The work was done to a very good standard, ith virtually no orange peel anywhere on the car, nd zero prep issues, ry spray, tc. There are a couple of filled in chips on the driver's door, ne on the driver's side rear fender, nd a couple of un-filled chips on the trailing edge of the driver's door. There is one barely perceptible ding on the driver's side rear fender that I'd have to point out to you. That's it. The balance of the car is flawless, ith excellent depth of shine throughout.
There is zero rust anywhere. The frame is laser straight, ith no issues, o welding repairs and all the suspension pickup points are rock solid. There is absolutely no evidence of any prior accident repairs, s the inside of all of the panels retain their original paint. The original stickers are on the inner fenders in the engine compartment and the trunk panels are all original. The only area that I question not being original 1975 sheet metal is the battery tray, nly because it's too perfect. I think that was perhaps replaced when the car was painted, nd the metalwork (if any) was done to a very high standard.
Interior/Top Condition
The interior is all original and in very good condition overall. The seats retain their original textured vinyl. The dash wood is original and shows only minor surface cracking in the varnish. There are no dash cracks.
The driver's seat squab vinyl has come loose at the back and the cushion has become a little flat. There are also two small holes on the top of the driver's seat back. These are pretty minor, specially given the fact that this is a 40-year-old British Leyland vinyl interior.
I think the carpets are original and are in excellent shape. Both footwells have rubber Triumph-logoed mats.
There is a radio aerial and speakers on the sides of the center console, ut a radio blanking plate is in the dash. The Heritage Certificate does not mention a radio under the "Factory Fitted Equipment" section, o I don't know if it was delivered with a radio.
The original tonneau cover is included along with the top boot. The tonneau is in very good condition, ut needs some snap replacement and to be left out in the sun for a while to stretch it out. The top boot is also original and in very good, sable condition. I believe the top to be somewhat recent, s the Isinglass is uncreased and in excellent condition. There also is not the reflective stripe on the sides and back that many original tops from this era have.
Summary
If you are looking for a collector-grade TR6 that you can both show and use, his is the one for you. It's not a 100-point trailer queen, ut not too far off of that mark. It drives very well and is a pleasure to take out for an early morning blast up your favorite road. It's nice enough that you'll park it in the far end of the parking lot and obsess over rock chips, ut not so perfect that you will want to relegate it to a car cocoon in a climate-controlled garage and only pull it out when the atmospheric conditions are just right.
Why am I selling it? That's a great question. I've had several vintage British cars and thoroughly enjoy them. But I'm feeling the track car itch again after a 10+ year hiatus and therefore am selling some of my collection to fund a more modern track toy. This TR6 is delightful, ut I need the garage space for a to-be-acquired track weapon.
Feel free to email/message me through ebay and I can send you my phone number. Happy to talk about the car at length and send a link to additional pictures.
