Description for Triumph Other 1981
The car is also posted locally on CL. I prefer that but Ebay gives much more exposure. Ok. here it is. I need to sell my 81 TR7. I am moving and can't take it with me. I bought this car to restore and use for a nice commuter but got a new job far away and I have to move. I have done quite a bit for this car and it is a reliable (yes. amazing huh?) driver. I'm taking a serious loss but I've had fun rebuilding it so far. The EFI system is THE way to go. it's simple and very reliable. Also EFI makes it very easy to pass smog since there is a lot less smog junk to worry about. This car also has the Delco electronic ignition which is rather rare but super reliable. The best fuel delivery and ignition systems were used in the 1981 models. the last of the TR7s. BY THE WAYWhat you see is NOT what you get. you'll be getting more parts such as the passenger door panel. speakers. window cranks. tonneau cover. service manual. an extra camshaft with low miles (for performance grind) and anything else I have laying around for this car. I am going to clean my slate and give whatever I have extra. I don't think I stored up any spare parts but I'll include them if I find anything during my cleanup. The car is an excellent candidate for a full restore. the frame is straight and no significant rust. Just a little under the hood where the old paint peeled. The car was kept indoors for most of its life and has very low miles on the engine. Compression is excellent and I did a valve job just to make sure everything was sound under the hood. Here is a list of the work I've done to get this car road worthy and sound. - Rebuilt hydraulic system. This is VERY important. it was done right and there are no issues with the brakes. they work perfectly. - replaced rear shocks - installed a good working radio. properly wired with speakers that are fully functional and sound good. Tape deck works good and I used my phone to play music through it. - got the trip meter and clock working! The trip reset needs the knob molded on somehow though but it works. Clock keeps good time. - rebuilt clutch hydraulics. Always nice for security. no fun if you can't change gears - new fuel filter. changed fuel injector seals to prevent vacuum leaks - adjusted mixture for modern gas. now runs smooth and clean with regular pump gas - paint job with DuPont single coat. This is the GOOD paint that lasts. not the clear coats that give out in about 2-5 years. This is like Volvo paint - Bosch Platinum plugs. Just better. clean burning and better acceleration - repaired windshield wiper motor. Opened. cleaned. lubed and functional. - glove box door with key - gas cap with key - new air intake hoses. Hard to find them! I found new stock replacement hoses. - new transmission mount. So it won't clunk. - new transmission fluid (Valvoline 85W I recall) - new differential fluid (also Valvoline) - flush engine oil. filter (will include a new one too) - new water pump. YES! These are real hard to change and expensive! I did the job right so you don't have to sweat it! - new coolant hoses. All of them. - new ignition module. Old one was cutting out at high RPMs. now there's a new one and plenty of torque - new trunk shocks. Also expensive - adjust rear pinion bearing preload So as you can see from this list. I've combed through this car well. I have also commuted with it over the summer and it has some great torque if you need to pass on the highway. I'm somewhat a perfectionist when it comes to my car running well and I trust my work on long drives. It's a "cool" car to my neighborhood kids and a bit of a sleeper with the good gear ratios when people see an older car as an easy target on the freeway. IDEASThis car would be perfectly suitable for a SAAB turbocharger or a Previa/MR2 supercharger since the pistons are dished (stock) and there is lots of room under the hood. I would work on it if given another year. and it has EFI making it way easy to put an AEM computer in there with bigger injectors. The TR8 may be fast but the TR7 can be made to be faster and it's so much less expensive! Not so good stuff - needs a new soft top. Old one is junk. it really needs a new one - windshield is cracked. Someone vandalized the car when the previous owner left it out on the street. some bullies were hating on his disabled son and took it home to him. - tires are old. The tires are good and have lots of tread but they are pretty old. better to get new ones though I have been driving it around recently on these ones anyways. - bit dirty. I don't have time to finish everything. it needs another good cleaning - interior not assembled yet. I ran out of time. can't finish it! I have most of the parts except the door lock top plastic pieces and trunk lock. - AC needs a charge. I didn't get to that repair yet. the clutch engages the compressor but I don't have time to hook up the AC stuff to figure out if there is a leaky hose or a loose connection. - drivers side window regulator so-so. Window goes up and down but not smoothly. Not really a major issue but I'm a perfectionist. I'd replace it. Not a rare part and not a hard job. - needs a few trim pieces. mostly rubber. They can be found through Victoria British. no problem. Smog TestsPlease check the date of the smog test form and think of how amazed the test technicians I've taken this car to were. Usually British + old = fail because CA smog tests are the toughest in the country. Today the tech cussed in surprise about how the car destroyed the smog test the past two times with no new cat. the cat is the original =). I need the car sold and gone be the end of this month and I will be leaving for training in 2 weeks. There is just no time anymore. I can show the car after work which is around 7pm or answer any questions. I know the workings of my car well so feel free to try and stump me =).
