TRUE SPORTS CAR
HANDLES WELL AT ANY SPEED
The 1980 Triumph TR7 like the one offered here was introduced as a new kind of sports car and was dubbed as ‘the shape of things to come.’ The TR7 was an extreme example of the, then in vogue, wedge style. The original design was sketched on a cocktail napkin by stylist Harris Mann. These cars were well received in the United States yet plagued by poor management running throughout the entire British automobile industry. The very best cars are the ones produced in Canley and these are the ones in demand.
The car offered here is a Canley. They are identified by a large wreath with the word TRIUMPH in the center. The Canley is also fitted with a nicer steering wheel and the hood has a center power bulge. A team of 67 inspectors constantly monitored the Canley assembly line and then a second group of inspectors monitored the 67 inspectors. There was a whole lot of checking going on, not to mention that ‘craftsmen and engineers with 50 years of sports car expertise’ were now building TR7s. However, the biggest deal for 1979 was the introduction of the TR7 convertible, finally. TRIUMPH INVITES YOU TO A NEW OPENING, was the opening line in the two-page color ad in Road & Track. Very nice. The cars were given a name, Drop Head Coupe (DHC).
The convertibles got all the attention for here was a car that was universally praised. All the magazine reviews were positive. Car and Driver featured the car on the cover of its august 1980 issue --- and enthusiastically described it as “Nothing less than the reinvention of the sports car.” Unfortunately, Triumph built only 2715 of these wonderful sports cars. The few that remain will soon be in the hands of collectors of rare cars.
THIS 1980 TRIUMPH
The TR7 offered here is a solid car and can be enjoyed just as it is. It has been a nice summer day car for me. It has plenty of power and goes through the gears effortlessly, all five of them. It is tight and handles very well at any speed. The clutch and brakes are in good working order. I know of no mechanical issues. The engine has plenty of power and runs very well. It starts on a dime every time. The odometer reads in KM. It is a blast to drive around town as it winds its way in and out of traffic. It handles well at highway speeds. It takes on bumps without wandering, shakingor chatter.
This is not a perfect car. There are some paint checks, the windshield has a stone chip and the driver’s side door panel is not perfect. The whole exterior is very presentable. And in my opinion is in very good shape for a 26-year-old British sports car. I did not find any dents or rust. All of the panels line up and fit properly. The top is in good condition andcan provide many more years of service. The underside is dry and all of the floor is rust free, as is the trunk. The original tools go with the car. The boot fits nicely and is in like-new condition. The interior is really nice. The seats are roomy and very comfortable and in very good condition, as are the carpets. It sure looks like a low mileage car.
