1969 Triumph GT6 MKII with 351 Windsor (Shelby / Knievel Inspired)

This particular car has a history that most would not have imagined. This car was purchased by a gentleman that fitted it with the Ford v8 Engine inspired by a conversation he overheard between two very iconic figures of the 1960's ~ Carol Shelby and Robert Craig Knievel. In 1969, these three happened to be sitting within talking distance from one another at a flat track motorcycle race in the Midwest. The story was told that Robert Knievel was inquiring to Carol Shelby about fitting a Triumph GT6 with a Ford v8 similar to what he had done with the A/C Cobra. Knievel thought it would be the perfect car for stunts. To my knowledge, this car was never built for Knievel, but this story stuck in the mind of young man. Bruce was just an impressionable teenager at this time and these two legends were his idols. Bruce set his mind to finding a 1969 Triumph GT6 that he could build as described that day between Knievel and Shelby. He also tracked down a 1969 351 Windsor and FMX transmission that was fitted to the car in true Shelby fashion.

The recent restoration:

Within the past two years, this car was completely restored from the ground up along with some upgrades that did not make it into the original build such as an IRS differential from a 2016 Camaro SS and upgraded adjustable coil over suspension to correct some of the chronic suspension problems found in the original Triumph transverse leaf spring set up. During this re-build, all suspension parts were restored with new bushings, nuts, bolts, brakes, shocks, etc. All brake lines, master cylinder, calipers and rotors are new and of the highest quality available for this model. The engine and transmission were rebuilt, and the car was completely rewired with modern fuse panel.

Some of the new and upgraded parts include:

  • Aluminum Radiator and Electric Fan
  • LED Headlamps
  • Gauges
  • Completely new brake system with drilled and slotted rotors
  • Stainless Steel headers and side pipes
  • Completely rebuilt Transmission and rebuilt motor
  • 2016 Camaro SS IRS differential with adjustable coil over suspension.
  • Too many other new parts to list
  • Restoration was just finished: The car runs and drives, but needs final shop alignment and road testing.

Hagerty estimates a 1969 Triumph GT6 in this condition worth between $20,000 and $40,000. However, this does not take into account the story and history of this particular car as well as the ingenuity required to install the Ford 351 Windsor, etc. There is no doubt that this is a true automotive investment the will rise in value over the course of time. This would be a great addition to any car collection with one of the most interesting stories I have come across. Many people build fiberglass kit cars of A/C Cobra's, but this is a coach built British classic done in true Shelby fashion with a story tying it back to the legend himself. This sort of thing cannot be replicated with a modern kit car.

1969 Triumph GT6 MK II

The history of the Triumph GT6:

The GT6 was designed by the talented Giovanni Michelotti. Michelotti was the in house designer for Triumph in the early 1960's. Michelotti also designed over a dozen Ferrari's, Maserati's and the classic 2002 BMW. The GT6 was inspired by the 24 hour race of Le Mans after Triumph Works race team fitted an aerodynamic hard top on a standard Triumph Spitfire. The Gt6 went on to compete in several road races in the late 1960's. In 1965, the GT6 took first and second place in class at Le Mans.

The MKII GT6 :

The MKII GT6 is identified as the most desirable GT6 produced due to the combination of larger engine, improved suspension and classic styling. There were 12,066 produced in total and even fewer where imported to the US. Many have identified this car as looking like a 2/3rdscale E-type Jaguar there are also several similarities to some of the Ferrari's Michelotti was involved with.
