While the Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter bus is instantly recognizable—everyone knows the quintessential “hippie bus” of the '60s and early '70s—the Type 2’s other variants are less known. This is partly due to a tax disagreement between the United States and Germany through the 1960s. When Germany imposed a tax duty on frozen chickens imported from the U.S., he United States retaliated with a 25 percent import duty on foreign trucks, ntended specifically to put the squeeze on Volkswagen and the German government. The tax worked: imports of German light-duty trucks dropped by two-thirds after the so-called “chicken tax” was imposed in 1963. That makes this 1971 Doppelkabine Pritschewagen—or double-cab flatbed pickup—even more unusual. Only 5.9 percent of Volkswagen’s worldwide truck production for 1971 consisted of double-cab pickups, nd only a tiny fraction of those were imported into the U.S., aking this a very rare find indeed. Although lovely in its two-tone Silver-over-Burgundy paint scheme with Tan interior and optional two-pillar canvas “tilt” canopy atop a wood-slat bed, he truck doesn’t ignore its workhorse roots. The second generation of Type 2, ffectionately called the “Loaf” by aficionados, mproved on the earlier trucks with half-shaft axles and constant velocity joints that eliminated the camber problems of earlier swing-axle trucks. For 1971, ew front disc brakes also improved handling. The new 1600cc engine had dual intake ports on each cylinder head and produced 50 HP: enough to move plenty of cargo, long with any passengers enjoying the full bench rear seat or split front seat. Today, assengers in this Volkswagen also have the luxury of popping in a CD while hauling their load.We welcome anypre-buy inspections before purchase and can help facilitate door to door shipping to anywhere in the world at an affordable price.
