Volkswagen, aker of the Beetle automobile, xpands its product offerings to include a microbus, hich goes into production on this day in 1950. Known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle was the Type 1) or the Transporter, he bus was a favorite mode of transportation for hippies in the U.S. during the 1960s and became an icon of the American counterculture movement.
The Exterior is in very great condition. No visible rust and the paint reflects attractively from the radiant sun. It was painted two tone: Cream and Red It was painted back to the Original color scheme. No Body Work was done to the car. It has no bondo work...just a 1 re-paint. Good whitewall tires all around.
The VW bus was reportedly the brainchild of Dutch businessman Ben Pon, n importer of Beetles to the Netherlands, ho saw a market for a small bus and in 1947 sketched out his concept. Volkswagen engineers further developed the idea and in March 1950, he vehicle, ith its boxy, tilitarian shape and rear engine, ent into production. The bus eventually collected a number of nicknames, ncluding the "Combi" (for combined-use vehicle) and the "Splittie" (for its split windshield); in Germany it was known as the "Bulli." In the U.S., t was referred to by some as a hippie van or bus because it was used to transport groups of young people and their camping gear and other supplies to concerts and anti-war rallies. Some owners painted colorful murals on their buses and replaced the VW logo on the front with a peace symbol. According to "Bug" by Phil Patton, hen Grateful Dead musician Jerry Garcia died in 1995, olkswagen ran an ad featuring a drawing of the front of a bus with a tear streaming down it.
The early versions of the T1 until 1955 were often called the "Barndoor" (retrospectively called T1a since the 1990s), wing to the enormous rear engine cover, hile the later versions with a slightly modified body (the roofline above the windshield is extended), maller engine bay, nd 15" roadwheels instead of the original 16" ones are nowadays called the T1b (again, nly called this since the 1990s, ased on VW's restrospective T1,2,3,4 etc. naming system.). From the 1963 model year, hen the rear door was made wider (same as on the bay-window or T2), he vehicle could be referred to as the T1c. 1964 also saw the introduction of an optional sliding door for the passenger/cargo area instead of the outwardly hinged doors typical of cargo vans.
The Interior is clean with the original back covers. No rips or tear. It's like you step back in time machine and went back in time. The front seat was recover to match the back gray scheme. All the panels, ncluding the doors are from the factory since day one. If you don't believe me, he new owner came take them off and look in the back side and see the VW stamp!
