Description for Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon 1971

This vehicle is being sold in as is condition with no returns. Feel free to check it out in person or request additional pictures. I have no title for the vehicle, n the state of Maine a title is not required for a vehicle of this age.

I bought this bus from someone in New Hampshire a couple of years ago. We have taken our kids camping in it 8 or 10 times and have absolutely loved it! Very fun, nd everyone wants to come check it out. 1971 is a very sought after year because of a few things: It is the first year of front disk brakes, t is the last year that VW installed the Type 1 engine, n 72' the engines changed. 1971 is also the last year with the small tail lights, hich give it the older, ore simple look.

I believe the bus sat for a long time. There was a "next service due" sticker dated about 10 years ago and the mileage on the odometer had not changed by more than 500 miles or so. Although when I bought it, t had a NH inspection sticker on the windshield dated 2012.

A lot of work has been done to this bus over the past couple of years.

Inner, id and outer driver side rocker

Passenger and driver doglegs

Section of cargo floor and back side of front wheel wells replaced with 16gauge metal

New tophat bar and new outriggers at front wheel wells

Replaced front turn signal lenses and seals

Replaced ignition switch

Added starter relay to take some load off of the new ignition switch

Replaced starter and solenoid

Replaced most brake lines

Replaced front brake calipers and new pads

Replaced rear wheel cylinders and shoes w/ new spring kit

Added split charge relay with deep cycle battery for camping

New stereo head unit w/ remote control, our new speakers (two front and two rear) and 400 watt amplifier

The two sets of interior lights work and I moved their power source to the new fuse box that is powered from the deep cycle battery. The stereo is also powered from the deep cycle. That way you can have interior lighting and music while camping and not worry about draining your starter battery.

The interior 120V outlet is new as well as the outside plug, o you can hook up to a power source with a typical extension cord and have "shore" power at your outlet inside the bus

Walls and ceiling are newly insulated

New interior panels all the way around....doors, alls, nd rear hatch

New Baltic birch headliner

Gear shifter extension added

VDO cylinder head temp gauge has been added

All lights and turn signals work

I have a new in the box replacement window for the drivers side rear with seal (I was going to put in this new window, ut never did. The old window is still installed. The part of the window that opens is rusted, hat is why I was going to replace it.)

Installed rear Volkswagen script and front Volkswagen emblem

4 new aftermarket hub caps on primed and painted rims

Custom Cherry tables

New subfloor and flooring with walnut trim

New curtains

All seats are rip free

Cabinets and ice box are in working order

Replaced 009 distributor with new Pertronix Flame Thrower SVDA distributor with electronic ignition

Replaced steering coupler with new from Wolfsburg West (not the cheaper one found at other vendors)

Replaced steering damper

Replaced brake fluid reservoir

Ran 4 spare 14gauge wires from the front dash to the rear engine compart for future gauges or whatever....extra wires are there and waiting

The pop up tent was replaced a couple summers ago. We bought the one Bus Depot carries.

The upper child cot was replaced a couple summers ago.

The front child cot (that suspends over the driver and passenger seat is also new)

Replaced two tires with new and left two tires on it because they looked new

I also have the replacement metal for the rear corner that is damaged on the drivers side behind the bumper.

This bus needs some frame restoration work, assenger side rocker and work at the rear wheel wells....typical rust areas. The underside is not attractive. The passenger side frame rail is rotted from the front beam forward. The front floors were fiber glassed by a previous owner. I have driven this bus around for the past two summers and loved it! No issues, o breakdowns. All the buses I looked at needed metal work, ut I settled on this one because of the fact that it is a 1971.

See pictures and videos for more information.

Two youtube videos I took last fall on my way to dropping it off to a friends garage for storage:

I am willing to work with your vehicle shipper at your expense.

The engine runs great, us shifts great! Typical bus........its slow and cool. You will not win any races or meet a hill that you don't need to downshift for, ut that's all part of it!
