I've had this bus for 20 years. Way too much to describe here but I'll list a few highlights, ood and not so good. Runs great, tarts hard when cold. Needs a cold start injector or the temperature sensor that tells it to activate, shot of starting fluid and it fires right up. Bodywork and paint are about eight years old, ould stand refreshing. 101K original miles. Tires are like new. MANY new parts have been installed and I have quite a few more to go with it. The rear hatch seal leaks. I have a pair of used rear quarter windows without vents and new seals for them as well as new seals for the driver's door and engine access lid. The stove and water pump worked well last time I used them. I have never tried the refrigerator, ust didn't trust the looks of the second battery wiring. I purchased it September 8, 995 in Church Hill,

TN from a used car dealer's son (I don't recall if he even registered in his name, ay have just driven it on a dealer tag). Original owner, rom Gate City,

VA, ought it in August 1977 from Harry Mills VW in Kingsport. I have the original owners manual and warranty and maintenance booklet showing the last dealer oil change at 29803 miles and title and registration application from the second owner dated 10/28/80. It had just over 60K miles when I bought it.

I didn't bother with documenting regular maintenance until May of 2007, t about 93K miles, hen I began to prepare for a bit of restoration. Prior to that, il changes were every 3,000 miles, alve adjustments every other oil change, nd tune ups and air filter when it seemed to need it.

Through the course of 2007 I had some restoration done: sheet metal included battery tray, oth rear corners, he lower panel below the engine compartment access lid, nd the front of the rear wheel arch. New windshield, ll window and door seals, ail lights and side markers, hrome bumpers, pdated headlights, op top seals and new canvas, nd paint, f course. When I got it back from the body work I installed new shocks,

new city water connection, ngine flush and full tune up.

In 2008 it got a new battery, ables, tarter and starter relay kit, ew exhaust system (all stainless fasteners) including heat exchangers, mergency flasher switch and five new tires, ply, ated correctly for the load. This was at almost 95K miles so the tires only have around 6,000 miles on them, ess considering the five wheel rotation. Christmas eve the bus was vandalized and both rear quarter windows were destroyed. The local shop I had to do the repair cut their own glass and cut it too small causing them to leak. (I have genuine VW glass and new seals to repair properly)

First thing in 2009 I had the front seats refurbished with new stuffing and covers along with matching kick panels and door panels. Then in the spring after a great vacation from TN to San Antonio,

TX, t suffered a small engine fire (thankfully I keep a fire extinguisher handy), he source was apparently fuel lines near the cold start injector. I took this opportunity to make some improvements in addition to the needed repairs.

All hoses, lamps, nd vacuum lines were replaced (including fuel tank vent lines), ll gaskets and seals and wires on the top side of the engine, harcoal canister, ew alternator, oil, ew fuel pressure regulator, hermostat, able and bracket (which had been removed by a PO), nd a new head temperature sensor. Fortunately I had a FI wiring harness from a 1978 bus that I converted to a carburetor, aved a lot of work and hassle. I also installed a Pertronix ignition (which I later removed when I discovered the gap would not remain constant, ade it impossible to set timing) and added a VDO temperature gauge in the dash. At this time I also switched to Swepco 306 20W-50 oil, he engine really seems to like it.

Drove it infrequently for the next several years (too busy to really enjoy it) until late in 2013 it became increasingly hard to start. Since I didn't have the time to do the work myself, took it to Asheville VeeDub in NC. They installed a used fuel pump, ew injectors and fuel lines, ew rear torsion bar springs, ew rear wheel cylinders, ew front brake pads, ew shift coupler and front shift bushing, lutch cable, leaned and repacked CV joints, nd changed gear oil. I installed a new double relay and gauge to monitor fuel pressure. Also installed a new pop top seal to keep things dry.

Still kept starting and driving a little here and there. Replaced the drag link in 2014 and got a few more odds and ends that it'll need to make it roadworthy like rubber seals for the ball joints and the new rear quarter window glass and seals. I also replaced the nylon block on the sliding door to keep it moving smoothly. When I drained the fuel tank to replace the fuel filter I noticed the fuel came out slowly so I'm thinking the tank should probably be removed and cleaned, ould be part of the reason it doesn't start easily. It does seem to like non-ethanol gas much better.

With a shot of starting fluid into the air cleaner inlet, t starts fairly easily. The cold start injector should be checked and the temperature sensor that tells it when to activate as well. Could also be just a dirty connection in the related wiring plugs. Runs well once started. Alternator belt needs to be changed, new one is included.
