Finished in beautiful Yukon Yellow, the paint is in very good order, with only minor blemishes showing on close notice. All the trim is present and is brilliant. Both front and rear chrome bumpers fit well and the finish is very good, including the override bumper guards and tubular override bars. The Hella headlights and bezels are in great condition. The taillights with bumper-mounted back-up lamps are in the same condition, with no hazing or cracks. The running boards are straight and in excellent condition. All of the car’s body panels are straight and dent-free, including the sunroof. Atop the car’s roof rests a wood and metal rack, perfect for additional storage after you fill the trunk. Driver assist features include four-wheel drum brakes. The 15-inch exterior matching steel wheels with Volkswagen center caps wrapped with Firestone Gum-Dipped whitewall tires, size 5.60-15, complete the look! The car has a clean undercarriage, new brake lines, brake hoses, emergency brake and other associated hardware plus new shock absorbers and front and rear sway bar links.
For 1967, VW made a yet-again larger-displacement engine available, a 1.5L, fed by a single Solex carburetor and making 53 horsepower at 4,200 rpm. This car’s engine bay is very tidy and the EIN is H5613998. The engine is hooked to a four-speed manual transmission. Changes were made to the rear suspension, including a widened track, adding softer torsion bars and a unique Z-configuration equalizing torsion spring. On US models, generator output went from 180 to 360 watts and the entire electrical system was upgraded from six to 12 volts. The clutch disc also increased in size and changes were made to the flywheel. New equipment included a driver’s armrest on the door and locking buttons on both doors. Safety improvements included two-speed windscreen wipers, reversing lights (in some markets) and a driver’s side mirror. In accord with the newly enacted US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, North American models received a dual-circuit brake system, the clear glass headlamp covers were deleted; the headlamps were brought forward to the leading edge of the front fenders, and the sealed-beam units were exposed and surrounded by chrome bezels.
Inside, the tan leatherette front bucket and rear seats look almost-new overall with no major signs of wear visible. The matching tan door panels, tan carpet and painted dashboard (the last year for that type) complement the car’s exterior and look fantastic. All VDO gauges have the correct appearance and function as designed. The original steering wheel and gear shifter add to the period feel. Completing this interior is the original, and very sought-after, Sapphire VI AM/FM monaural radio made by Bendix.
Competition to this Volkswagen in 1967 included Toyota’s Corolla, Opel’s Kadett, MG’s 1100, Fiat’s 1100R and Austin’s 1100.
