This is a 1979 VW Superbeetle convertible that has just been restored, was finished this past summerand is in fantastic condition! These cars are very collectible since it was the last year the Beetle was sold in America and many have been tucked away. Low mileage ones keep popping up for sale since they never ran right and got parked. The problem with these cars is they came with electronic fuel injection which never worked properly and it was very costly for their owners to keep them running if they could find someone who knew how to work on them. They were nothing but headaches for the VW dealerships back then and no better 38 years later! I know the purists will argue this but ask any mechanic and they will agree. That being said, when I found this car it had been sitting for many years, the previous owner had a rebuilt engine installed at 85k the body only had 93k miles on it, but was not running due to problems with the injection. The first thing I did was to remove the FI and locate all the parts to convert it to 1974 style (the last year Bugs were carbureted). The body was removed and the chassis was sandblasted, new floor pans were welded in and everything coated with epoxy primer, urethane black paint and 3M undercoating. Next the following parts were replaced. Urethane control arm bushings, balljoints, both complete tie rods. Front struts, rear shocks, transmission mounts, clutch cable and guide tube, accelerator cable, heater cable, emergency brake cables, complete brake system, all steel lines, all rubber brake hoses, all wheel cylinders, all brake shoes, master cylinder, brake light switches, fuel tank, gauge sender and all fuel and vapor recovery lines. The engine internally was still like new since it had very low miles since being rebuilt but all outside items were replaced. Starter, alternator, clutch, new vacuum advance distributor with electronic ignition (no points to file and gap), all plug wires, electric fuel pump, both heater boxes and muffler installed with stainless hardware and with special stainless steel tailpipes that will NEVER rust as all vw tailpipes do! Cosmetically the car got the top frame sanded, primed and painted satin black, new headliner, all padding and new black top installed with all new cables, straps and rear glass frame stapling insert, glass seal, hinge covers, all top weather stripping a new black parade boot cover and sun visors. The interior has had all seats completely taken apart, frames repainted, new foam cushions and the best seat covers ( TMI ) installed, new seat slides and a new complete charcoal color carpet set. They look great and are very comfortable! The body had a good paint job when I got it and just a few small issues had to be repaired to be ready for new paint. It has a base coat/ clear coat urethane paint job in the original color of River Blue and it shines beautifully and it has a new rear window shelf welded in (a typical place for rust since no one notices when the rear window is leaking!) original rockers and heater channels and side conv supports and a new pr of running boards. All the rubber weather stripping around hood, deck lid, body to chassis seals are new. The doors have new NOS German seals. All side chrome is new along with all the attaching clips. It has a brand new shaded windshield and new seal with the chrome bead as it had originally, wiper arms were bead blasted and painted the correct satin black and have 2 new Bosch wiper blades and a new washer jet! Many chrome dress up items: door handle shields, front hood handle shield, front air grill trim, rear fender splash shields. It has an Alpine stereo system in the dash with a new antennae and a cable run to the rear window well for a CD changer that can be added later. The VDOclock keeps time and the speedometer/ odometer work properly as does the fresh air fan and heater, although this is a fair weather car and should never be driven in winter conditions! It has the original sport rims with all the original center caps and the special plastic 16 lug nut caps. I just had new tires put on the front and a front end alignment done. The rear tires and spare are used but in like new condition. Looking through the ads for 79 Convs I see almost all of them still have the original Fuel injection. Great if you just want to look at the car and don't mine the stalling, slow idling, fast idling, hesitation, hick ups etc. But if you want a dependable 79 that is a blast to drive here is one for your consideration. It never fails toget thumbs up and attract attentionwherever it is driven. Please ck with your wife before bidding and ask questions before the auction ends, not after.
