My Experience
What a FUN car!
It starts, it runs, the transmission (4 Speed) is smooth, no slippage in the clutch. It’s a driver. You can drive and restore at the same time.
When I received the VW, I put on 4 new tires. Since this car is registered as an Antique car, I have only driven it on special occasions and to keep it fresh.
The Body
The original floor pan had some pin holes, otherwise is was in good condition.. I fiber glassed the entire interior floor pan.
A portion of the luggage compartment was rusted out. I have cut out around the rusted area, treated it, and installed aluminum sheeting. A replacement luggage section is available online.
The tire well has a small section that has rusted through.
The Top
The top frame hinge areas were replaced with new ones and welded.
Top has been removed, the top frame restored in preparation for a new top. To keep the cost down, I planned to install only a vinyl top, without the intermediate horse hair liner and interior liner. I have had several convertibles that only had a vinyl/canvas top. Not only is it less expensive, but also it makes the top opening/closing easier with less weight.
The paint is good, not exceptional. There are some small surface rust spots that can be repaired easily.
The Engine
Great! Starts every time. Runs smooth and fast.
Electrical
All systems function.
Original radio AM/FM works poorly. Needs attention.
Why am I selling it?
This has been a long term “work in progress!” We have bought a new home and my time is spent in remodeling it. Just no more time to continue to work on my fun VW!
VW Tow Bar
I have a tow bar that is designed specially for this classic VW. This is included with the VW.
