Description for Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon 1972
VW VANAGON WESTFALIA BUS POP-UP CAMPER Ready for restoration includes BODY, ENGINE (Complete, unknown condition) and TRANSMISSION (manual, original)I'm an experienced classic vehicle restorer. I bought this van as a fixer-upper for my wife. Some drunk driver decided, however, that the back of my car made a perfect parking space for his 40+mph parking attempt. Unfortunately, the he flunked high school physics - two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.
The end result is that I'm now disabled and cannot restore this vehicle. I need to sell this vehicle to pay for something modern that meets my disability needs. My loss is your gain.
It's got all the bones for making a great camper van for the dedicated VW Camper enthusiast. This is a pop-top "Westy" with a front-tipping roof. This ready-to-be-rebuilt VW pop-up camper variant is a classic, and a great investment for thefix-and-sell restorer. [See EBay Item #222289188838or222774995127 for examples of retail pricing for restored classic VW camper vans.] Parts are readily available on EBay and from other sources.
I've included illustrative drawings of how this would van would look fully restored, along with an image from a VW owner's manual specifications page for your reference. If you have questions, please write me.
NAMES & NICKNAMES: Officially calledthe Volkswagen Transporter and Volkswagen Kleinbus, the Type 2 earned many nicknames from its fans.In the US, the Type 2 had several colorful nicknames: VW bus, "Vee-Dub," Minibus, "Hippie-mobile," "Hippie bus," "Hippie van," "Kombi," Microbus, "Splitty" (used on pre-1967 split front screen variants of the Type 2), "Baywindow" (post-1970 variant of Type 2), Vanagon, Westfalia or "Westy," "CamperVan" or Transporter to name a few popular variants. SUSPENSION & FRAME: This "Westy" bus uses a pair of fully independent axles which utilize a double-jointed design with constant velocity joints at the end of each axle, similar to those found on a BMW. The result is that the rear wheels no longer camber inward (or tuck under as it was called) which was the case at high speeds with the old swing-axles that are found on the the Split-Window Buses before 1969. The C/V joints are what allows each rear wheel to maintain a constant vertical camber, which improves safety at freeway speeds.
Front and rear suspension units use the traditional Porsche design, independent torsion plates upfrontand two independent torsion bars for the rear. This type of torsion bar suspension may have dated back to the e 1930's, but it is an all-wheel, independent suspension system that works and it is very robust.
There is some rust present but testing indicates that the frame and floor are solid, and most rust is surface corrosion - which is why I bought it in the first place. Thye front clip has been completely replaced. Like I said, good bones for restoration.
TRANSMISSION:The original 4-speed manual is present and installed. This was a solid transaxle when it was parked.
ENGINE: Equipped with a Type 4 Volkswagen air-cooled boxer engine with four horizontally opposed cast-iron cylinders, cast aluminum alloy cylinder heads and pistons, magnesium crankcase, and forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods. Installed isa 1700 cc 95 metric horsepower (70kW, 94bhp) with dual ports. . It was running when the camper was parked to begin restoration. The present condition of the engine is unknown but it is a complete engine with a monza aftermarket exhaust. I also have a "009" distributor and Bosch blue coil for it.
NOTE: THIS VEHICLE IS INTENDED FOR RESTORATION AND IS CURRENTLY NOTDERIVABLE. It is being offered to you, the antique/classic vehicle restorer, for restoration to operational condition.
VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER: The VIN number listed in the ad is not correct. EBay's listing software insists on a VIN number, but VW did not use modern VIN numbers on its vans until until years after this vehicle was built. I can provide the number from the title on request.
MILEAGE: EBay requires mileage be entered. Please be aware that the mileage stated above may be incorrect. The actual mileage is unknown.
