Description for Volkswagen Thing 1971

This is not your everyday 73-74 US import Thing. This is a non-import 1971 Safair brought into the US from Oaxaca, Mexico back in 2004 by the previous owner. It still bares the Mexican registration sticker on the windshield. This is not a NATO thing. I bought it in 2012 and it was in very poor condition. The front and rear had been hit in its past a poorly repaired with pounds of bondo. It had been painted every color you could think of and I stripped it down to bare metal and painted it this olive color. The original color was a yellow/brown that can be seen in a 1972 VW Safari brochure. I replaced the front and rear clips and replaced any rust areas including a right rear floor pan section and spray sealed all of the interior channels to prevent it from rusting again. This car is now 100% rust free. It is the most solid early Thing you will see in the US. If you find an early Thing for sale it will most likely be customized and missing all of the rare 1972 down parts. This car has all the early Thing only parts like the steering wheel, kilometer speedometer, the glove box door, small bump front fenders, 15 inch slotted wheels two of which are original to the car and reduction gearbox transmission. I have the original early deck lid but it is not on the car right now because it is pretty bent up but it does come with the car. I had to source the correct high quality OEM Hella taillights and not the cheap reproduction euro style. The top is from Thing Shop and has one grommet torn just behind the driver side rear door but has not affected the use of the top. I do not have side curtains for it. It has a custom roof rack which can be removed quickly with pins. I put a lot of thought into the design of the rack and it is attached with brackets that bolt to existing holes to not damage the car. I have carried bikes and kayaks on the rack. I also have an Ebersbacher gas heater that goes with it but it is not in working condition. I have taken this car on many camping trips and it is a reliable driver. The engine is an all stock Mexican case built 1600cc with dual port heads. Please message me if you have any questions.
