Description for Volkswagen Beetle - Classic 1956
1956 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
The word Volkswagen means "People's car" in German. Its headquarters are in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony. It was started in the 1930's, at the request of the country's leader, Adolf Hitler, to produce a car designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
For consignment a car ordered by Hitler for the masses, and designed by Ferdinand Porsche, wrapped in Amazon Green with a white canvas convertible top. Wide whites, dog dish caps, and bumpers in chrome with vertical pushers, and a curved protector rod up front and on the rear as a connection of said push bars.. It does not get any better folks, right out of 1956, and the capability to perform a bit of "schnell".
Exterior
Ich ben ein Berliner, but in reality, it was Wolfsburg where this little droplet of automotive history was born. Gebadte in Amazon Green which is decorous and is a respray in the original color which is rarely seen these day .... but I digress.... Simple design that changed little over time, this version sports a front fender that is exactly like the rear fender, chromed rockers and running boards, and ....an embossed rear "hood" this is seldom seen on an everyday VW bug. Also not seen is the belt line chrome trim spear adding a little bit of class, not that it needs it. This car presents so cool with the top down, flopped all over the rear deck in many layers, but VW has always insisted their tops are insulated, and this one is in good condition with one small tear above the driver's door, and soundproof, and in clean white.
Interior
A swing of the simple door, and we see Ivory White panels and a nifty scrunched pouch with exterior matching metal above. Knobs are like new. Seats are white vinyl and have exterior matching piping. Original steering wheel is white, no cracks, and it matched the long shift lever knob. Dash is exterior matching Amazon Green and is peppered with simple chrome and 1 instrument! Black carpet is on the floors, and there is a rear bench present...Alle einsteigen!!
Drivetrain
The condition of the cars and attention to detail that come into this place never cease to amaze me, and this one is no exception!! Take a gander at this 1200cc horizontally opposed 4 banger, topped with a 1-barrel Solex 28 PCI downdraft carb. and balled by a 4-speed manual tranny. Beeindruckend! (look it up... its apropos!)
Undercarriage
Giving this classic a lift we are greeted by German fastidiousness in the form of rust free, black straight frame, and nearly showroom floorpans and underside. Transverse torsion bars upfront provide the ride, and Swing arms with transverse torsion bars are on the rear. Drum brakes are all around.
Drive-Ability
My second love next to another car is a VW beetle. They are so pedestrian, they are undeniably attractive, and the older and better condition, the better. A quick starter, smooth shifter, this thing runs excellently. It is very comfortable and turns on a dime for this city dwellers who see a parking space on the other side of the street, they will stop for you because it looks soooo kewl! Good ride, and I wanted to put the top down, but just was enjoying going through the gears so much I couldn't stop to do so. Good no one jumped out at me as the horn works sporadically, and I was sure not to go too far as the sending unit is inoperable, leaving me with an empty feeling as to gas level!
These classic bugs are just getting better and better. Reminiscent of a bygone simple era where the German invasion came in the form of a VW, and not a Messerchmitt. The Americans gladly sopped up this German engineering by Mr. Porsche, and some have thankfully survived. This is a wonderful preserved example, rust free, and just a beautiful engine bay, and interior. "rouschmidt."
